The Department of Plant & Microbial Biology (PMB) and Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology (NST) at UC Berkeley provides outstanding academic opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities
- Perform standard, routine, and repetitive microbiology and nutritional scientific experiments with complex solutions, reagents, and culture media for undergraduate lab courses.
- Perform laboratory procedures for microbiology and nutritional scientific courses, including set up and break down of the full experimental space.
- Procure and maintain specimens (including animals) from the Botanical Garden, Herbarium, and other sources. Grow plants under greenhouse and controlled growth chamber conditions to be used in standard and routine experiments.
- Perform a variety of non-standard experiments working in communication with instructors, GSIs and the teaching lab work lead in preparing and participating in test run experiments to determine feasibility.
- Follow universal safety precautions and be up to date with safety training including biohazardous materials.
- Perform routine equipment cleaning and maintenance of equipment and assist with arrangements for minor to major service or repair as necessary. Keep the teaching laboratory equipment inventory and chemical inventory updated.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment, specifically spectrophotometers, PCR machines, centrifuges, power supplies, gel boxes, pipetmen, vortexers, sterile flow hoods, light sources, and microscopes.
- Must be dependable, meticulous, and be able to maintain a high level of laboratory cleanliness and organization.
- Must possess the ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision and to be a proactive and effective problem solver.
- Excellent time management skills, and the ability to work well under time pressure and exercise judgment to solve operational problems. The ability to set priorities and manage multiple overlapping deadlines that frequently change, in the midst of numerous interruptions.
- Medium to advanced proficiency in computer/productivity software to email, create and modify documents and spreadsheets, organize files and use of the internet to place orders and gather information are essential to the position.
- Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals (staff, students, faculty, undergraduates). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to be both firm and flexible, and to exercise good judgment in deciding which approach is needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.
Education/Training:
- BS or BA degree in a scientific discipline, or 5 years relevant laboratory experience, or a combination thereof and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is at $24.88 (Step 1) to $26.51 (Step 4)
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
