Job Description
Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Area Dean, plans, organizes, coordinates, and evaluates Umoja program activities and other related duties as assigned. Counsels and advises students with respect to career, academic, and vocational goals. May teach classes in guidance, learning strategies, and education. This is a dual counselor/ program coordinator position.
The ideal candidate will share Norco College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently serve approximately 13,000 students annually, the majority of whom are from historically underserved populations, 58% Latinx, 9% Asian American, 7% African American, and 18% white. Education:
Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent.
(All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications must be from accredited institutions).
Experience:
A minimum of the equivalent of one-year full time counseling experience at the collegiate level AND the equivalent of one year of teaching experience, also at the collegiate level, are required. Knowledge and experience in teaching guidance courses is required. Experience with online teaching and online counseling is desirable.
Experience working with special populations is desirable. Recent experience working with African American, Latinx/Hispanic and other racially, ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom or as an advisor is desired. Demonstrated understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes is desired. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity and equity gaps in the classroom, as well as experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching is preferred.
The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and practices for engaging our diverse student population in addition to having the ability to teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and fulfill the duties of a full-time counseling faculty member in a shared governance environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Recent experience working with historically underserved students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education.
Must demonstrate evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (E.C. 87360a).
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, which includes educational and career counseling to a diverse community college student population; providing support services to students at risk; development of student educational plans; assisting students with the transfer process; recruitment and outreach activities; instruction and class preparation; committee work; program and curriculum development, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
2. All faculty will participate in outcomes assessment work.
3. Provides leadership for the Umoja program; coordinates and operates the college's Umoja program; maintains compliance with Umoja state regulations and District policies regarding the administration of the Umoja program, prepares the annual Umoja program review, budget, needs statistics, and year-end reports; provides leadership and in-service training for staff.
4. Develops liaisons with high schools and community services agencies; attends regional and state Umoja meetings and conferences.
5. Establishes Umoja program eligibility parameters of new students; monitors Umoja program eligibility of continuing students; provides orientation for new Umoja program students and assists with registration; works with counseling staff as part of the counseling program; assesses need for tutoring and arranges for same; provides academic, vocational and personal counseling.
6. Other responsibilities may include developing career seminars and classes; transfer and study skills workshops; evaluating and recommending appropriate career instruments, including computer software; collaborative activities within department and other disciplines; developing a comprehensive career decision-making process for use with undecided students.
7. Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintain broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, appropriate professional activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
