The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and outreach.
The Cornell Agricultural Systems Testbed and Demonstration Site (CAST) is a cluster of three farms in New York State that will host data-driven research, extension, and education under the aegis of the Cornell Institute for Digital Agriculture (CIDA).
What You Will Do
The CAST Program and Operations Manager will partner with the Director and Executive Committee in the strategic development, direction, and implementation of research, extension, and educational activities with considerable latitude for exercising judgment and self-direction. Additionally, this position will require:
- Manage research and demonstration operations at the CAST.
- Work with the CAST executive board and partners on the development of a program to expand research infrastructure to be implemented based upon the guidance from the CAST Executive Board.
- Act as primary resource for ad hoc requests from the CAST Executive Board, CAST industry partners, CIDA leadership, CAST participants, etc. these requests will relate to project and research refinements to protocols.
- Stay abreast of ag technology environment, including new technologies developed at the CAST and by other institutions and industry; provide continuity and history for CAST.
- Ensure all required reporting is compiled and delivered to funding agency.
- Ensure good communications across all CAST participants, including researchers, farm unit managers, extension faculty, students, and all stakeholders.
- Oversee a 4-year, 4.3-million-dollar budget.
- Partner with Grant/Contract Officer and Department Financial/Grant Staff to prepare and oversee MOUs for all CAST subcontracts.
- Attendance of educational seminars and workshops will be collectively decided by the incumbent and their supervisor.
What We Need
We are looking for a talented individual to coordinate operations with CAST-associated researchers and farm unit managers, partners, and stakeholders. Additionally, we need a talented individual who builds and maintains effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. Additional requirements include:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Master's Degree and 3+ years of experience in agriculture-relevant areas, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and database management systems.
- Experience in prioritizing multiple projects, schedules, and priorities to meet timelines.
- Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.
- Demonstrated experience in building positive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Effective communication, leadership, and teamwork skills are essential.
- Successful experience as in working freely and team player is critical.
- Experience in listening to team members to foster/encourage collaboration through influence.
- Excellent organizational experience.
- Knowledge of how to balance conflicting priorities, make informed choices, and use sound judgment in completing urgent tasks.
- Knowledge in budgeting and accounting policies and practices
- Knowledge of federal/state regulations regarding accountability and expenditures.
- Knowledge of applicable HR laws at the local, state, and federal level.
- Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
- Previous experience in using data-driven technologies to make decisions regarding livestock and crops production and management.
- Strong working knowledge of contract management and administration
- Understanding of subcontract and purchasing/invoicing procedures with possible vendors and subcontractors.
- Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
- Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- Prior experience with farm equipment and facilities management.
- Knowledge of crops and livestock management practices.
- Ability to learn Cornell University policies and practices.
This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State two days a week; an on-site presence in Ithaca is required three days a week. Moderate travel (about 40%) will be required throughout New York State.
