Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Middle & Upper School Humanities Teacher, with employment beginning in August 2023.
About Barrie School
Established in 1932, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves nearly 400 students in two divisions: Barrie Lower School (12-months to 5th grade) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (6th to 12th grade). The school is also the home to the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies, a nationally recognized training institute for teachers throughout the region, and Barrie Camp, a day program that serves more than 500 families each summer.

Position
Barrie Middle and Upper School (grades 6-12) is seeking a Humanities teacher for the 2023-2024 academic year to teach interdisciplinary 7th and 9th grade Humanities courses. Humanities courses at Barrie incorporate English language arts, literature, history, religion, economics, and philosophy, among other disciplines. The ideal candidate will have a background in one or multiple of those disciplines, a demonstrated commitment to antiracist teaching practices and building inclusive community, and an interest in experiential, hands-on education. A commitment to bringing out the best in each student and a dedication to lifelong learning is also essential. Applicants from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
- Comfort or experience with a decolonized and critical approach to history and/or literature.
- Demonstration of cross-cultural competence, empathy, and anti-racist pedagogies.
- Passion for both middle and upper school humanities.
- Experience supporting an intentionally diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.
- Knowledge of project-based learning (PBL) as a teaching methodology.
- Experience with differentiation, providing supports for students across the academic spectrum.
- Two to three years teaching experience preferred but not required.
- Excellent communication skills, detail-oriented, and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty.
- Flexibility, a creative spirit, a desire to collaborate, a sense of humor, and a commitment to building rapport with colleagues are essential.
Responsibilities
- Teach one section of MS Humanities and one section of US Humanities (equivalent of four courses)
- Serve as an advisor to seven to ten students in middle or upper school.
- Participate and/or lead experiential learning programs for middle or upper school students.
- Teach one trimester elective to be determined in consultation with the Dean of Studies and Humanities Department Chair.
- Participation in clubs, coaching, and/or other student activities.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
