Departmental Overview
College Overview:
The College of Letters & Science is the largest of the university's 14 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. L&S encompasses more than half of the campus' faculty, nearly three-quarters of its undergraduate students, and half of its Ph.D. candidates. Organized into six divisions: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, L&S Core, and the Undergraduate Studies Division. L&S offers more than 70 departmental majors, including joint majors, majors administered on behalf of other Berkeley schools and colleges, and simultaneous degree programs, and over 80 minors. These programs collectively afford vast opportunities to study and conduct research both within and outside of the traditional disciplines.
Department Overview:
UGIS is a center for innovation in undergraduate education that extends beyond traditional departmental boundaries and brings together 30 lecturers and faculty from across campus as well as 70 academic student employees to teach in the department's degree programs. Together, these degree programs attract undergraduates who wish to explore intellectually engaging and promising interdisciplinary areas of study. The 3 UGIS majors include American Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies Field major (ISF), and Media Studies, which number more than 700 declared majors in total. The 5 UGIS minors include American Studies, Applied Language Studies, Creative Writing, Disability Studies, and Politics, Philosophy, and Law. Academic advising is provided by a team of 4 Student Academic Advisors.
The role of the Student Academic Advisor 3 (SAA3) is to provide academic advice to the undergraduates as well as coherence, stability and consistency to the major program. Using advanced academic advising concepts and experience, the SAA must address the challenges inherent in interdisciplinary and interdepartmental majors, and develop solutions to these problems. The advisor provides intake advising and collaborates closely with the faculty advisors for the programs. The position must have a broad and detailed knowledge of the academic units and undergraduate curriculum across the campus and a specialized understanding of the nature of interdisciplinary inquiry. The advisor works independently with only general guidance from the faculty director and the supervisor (UGIS Manager, Academic Programs). While each advisor has primary program responsibilities, they work as a team providing backup support as needed to each of the three major and five minor programs.
