Description
The Political Science Department at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in East Asian Politics at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2024. Applicants should demonstrate a well-developed research agenda, a promise of sustained scholarship, and a record of effective teaching.
Qualifications
The department seeks a scholar with research and teaching expertise in the politics of East Asia, broadly understood to encompass Northeast and Southeast Asia. We are open to applications from scholars in both comparative politics and international relations whose research is focused on one or more countries in the region. The successful candidate's research may focus on any of a range of substantive topics - including but not limited to, democratization, political economy, state-society relations, and foreign policy - and should demonstrate a capacity to engage with normative issues underlying critical debates in the field. The candidate would be expected to work closely with the program on International Security and Conflict Resolution and the Center for Asian & Pacific Studies. The department is open to a diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches.
The Political Science Department at San Diego State is dedicated to the ideal of the engaged teacher-scholar. We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. A completed file includes a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, complete teaching evaluations (quantitative evaluations and complete sets of qualitative evaluations of recent courses), sample syllabi, academic writing samples, diversity statement, and three letters of recommendation. The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $79,000 to $83,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidates qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
