The Language, Literacy, and Culture doctoral program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks a tenured Associate Professor who has a demonstrated interdisciplinary scholarly expertise in media studies, with secondary areas of research possibly in one or more of the following areas: e-media, gender, racial identity, and/or educational achievement (K-12 or higher education). We seek a scholar with a robust and productive research program, and the ideal candidate will also have further demonstrated specialization and experience using their research to engage in public-facing scholarship by actively disseminating research findings to broader audiences through the media (e.g., print, television, social media) and other forms of outreach.

As an interdisciplinary doctoral program, we seek a candidate who can work across disciplines supporting doctoral students with research interests in both the humanities and social sciences.

A successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in Media Studies, Communication, or other broadly interdisciplinary related fields. The successful applicant will contribute fully to our interdisciplinary doctoral-only program, especially teaching core doctoral courses including introductory theory and methods courses and directing doctoral dissertations. While not a requirement, experience mentoring doctoral students is highly desirable. The candidate will also be able to develop courses centered on their areas of scholarly expertise. Additionally, we seek a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence in their research, teaching, and service activities.

About the LLC Doctoral Program

We are a doctoral only interdisciplinary program that investigates the concepts and processes of language, literacy, and culture in relation to social, historical, technological, and ideological formations. We advocate for socio-cultural and linguistic diversity in research, practice, and policy, with special emphasis on social justice, change, equity, power, and identity. Our intellectual community includes a small core group of faculty members in the doctoral program and more than 30 affiliate faculty from more than nine programs and departments across our campus offering our graduate students synergistic, collaborative, community- and place-based approaches to research especially in relation to the Baltimore region.
