The UCLA School of Law is seeking a top public interest lawyer to become the Executive Director of the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy. The Executive Director will develop the vision and the overall goals and programs for the Program and will be responsible for their day-to-day implementation. The Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibilities for the Program's staff, research, programs, fundraising, budget, and mission. The Executive Director will be responsible for leading the public interest law and policy curricular program as well as leading, promoting, and creating public interest-oriented academic opportunities and programs more broadly at UCLA School of Law.
UCLA School of Law's David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy (Epstein Program) is the leading public interest curricular program in the United States. For over twenty-five years decades, the Epstein Program has trained and mentored future attorneys to become innovative leaders dedicated to public service and advancing justice. Today, more than 700 Epstein Program graduates are engaged in a broad array of social and economic justice issues both domestically and abroad. The hallmarks of the Epstein Program are its exceptional faculty, cutting-edge curriculum, vibrant community, and deep commitment to student success. The Epstein Program has specialized admissions, teaching, mentoring, and advising for Epstein Program students and alumni.
The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the Epstein Program in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Public Interest & Public Service, Epstein Program Faculty Director, as well as Program faculty, staff, students, and alumni as appropriate. The Executive Director will develop and oversee implementation of the strategic plan for the Epstein Program and for the public interest programs more generally at UCLA School of Law; build on the Epstein program's reputation for innovation and intellectual leadership; and work to advance the Epstein Program as a leader in research, scholarship, and law and policy related to the practice of public interest law, and substantive areas of public interest law. Additional aspects of the position include teaching at least one class per year to Epstein Program students; providing individualized academic counseling to support Epstein Program students in completing the Specialization and in choosing other academic courses; working together with relevant School of Law administrators and faculty to advance the School of Law's public interest curricular offerings, including the Epstein Program's core curriculum and clinical course offerings; and providing individualized, confidential counseling services for Epstein Program students and alumni regarding public interest career development, job search strategies, and job search skill development. Other aspects of the position include coordinating the Program admissions process; creating and meeting the Program operating budget; developing and strengthening Program alumni relations; and leading fundraising and grant activities on behalf of the Program.
The ideal candidate will have deep and sustained experience in and commitment to public interest work; an excellent reputation and extensive network in the public interest community; successful senior management and leadership experience; and a track record of innovation and program building. We seek candidates with demonstrated administrative and organizational skills, and success in fundraising and managing a budget. Successful candidates will be creative, motivated, committed to diversity, have an entrepreneurial spirit, and be passionate about the work of the Program. The individual will have an established track record for organizing and leading a strong team; be able to generate investment and enthusiasm; have strong interpersonal skills; and have a demonstrated ability to create and maintain productive relationships with faculty, students, alumni, colleagues, constituents, and donors. The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communications skills and will be able to represent the Program to the press, policymakers, and the public. This position is a full-time, year-round, non-tenure track academic appointment with an expected start date of July 1, 2024. This appointment is subject to the rules and regulations of the Regents of the University of California, which are mostly embodied in The UCLA CALL and the University of California Academic Personnel Manual. Minimum academic requirements include a J.D. or equivalent advanced degree from a U.S. school and an excellent academic record. The salary and level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $160,000 to $185,000.
