Job Description
Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking an Applied Geography faculty member to fill a position starting January 2024. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.
Applied Geography is one of five two-year career programs housed within the Department of Applied Technologies. We offer an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Applied Geography as well as two certificates: Cartography and Geographic Information Systems and Geographic Education. Some of our courses meet the requirements for courses under Behavioral and Social Science and Natural Science with Lab. Courses are transferable to four-year institutions through our articulation agreement.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus). Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools.
- Applied Geography faculty are expected to be well-rounded and have the ability to teach both cartographic and geographic related courses.
- Advise students about discipline course offerings, related programs or certificates, transfer opportunities, and careers in applied geography.
- Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, online, weekend, winter, and/or accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
- Incorporate educational technology, including an enterprise platform such as Blackboard, into instruction and zero-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
- Utilize various teaching modalities/formats (e.g., seat-based, blended/hybrid, virtual "live-online" remote, and online).
- Implement embedded advising and/or embedded classroom support services.
- Serve on and lead department, discipline, campus, and collegewide committees.
- Engage in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs, and learning outcomes to increase student success.
- Maintain an active program of professional development and participate in professional organizations and activities.
- Actively support the College's Academic Master Plan, community engagement goals, and support department-related community and business advisory boards.
- Build constructive and supportive relationships with colleagues, the department chair, and administrators.
- Foster an environment where ethical standards are routinely and transparently considered by all faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Faculty members are to be active, present, and visible on campus, practice open-door policy and be available to students.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in the field is considered if the candidate is currently working in a related position and has teaching experience.
- At least two years of work-related experience in the cartographic and geographic discipline.
- Proficiency with and ability to use a Learning Management System (LMS) and other web-based instructional technology to facilitate learning in a web-enhanced environment.
- Demonstrated experience teaching using a variety of delivery methods, online resources and technology applications across the curriculum.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in geography or a related field.
- At least three years of teaching in the cartographic and geographic discipline.
- Experience with GIS and graphic software, i.e., ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, Python, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Hiring Range is $62,319 to $93,020 annually.
