Position Summary:
The Laboratory Farm Director reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) and is responsible for advancing the College vision, goals, and objectives. The CAFES Laboratory Farms are student-oriented farms integral to our educational programs and provide support for the teaching and research mission of the college. The laboratory farms consist of a 475-acre multi-enterprise livestock and crop laboratory farm (Mann Valley Farm) and a Campus Farm consisting of 130 acres primarily devoted to horse operations. CAFES is a leader in the State of Wisconsin in training students in fields such as dairy science, animal science, production agriculture, and natural resources. The Mann Valley Farm supports The Wisconsin Dairy Innovation Hub https://dairyinnovationhub.wisc.edu/ the purpose and intent is to harness research and development to keep Wisconsin's dairy community at the global forefront in producing nutritious dairy products in an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable manner. The primary responsibility of the Farm Director is to ensure that all academic and co-curricular programs within the farms are effectively supported to ensure students are best prepared for the next stage in their careers.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and college leadership to achieve a balance between the educational mission of the farm and the economics of production agriculture. The individual is responsible for managing the budget, personnel, and daily operations of the Mann Valley Laboratory Farm and the Campus Laboratory Farm. The Laboratory Farm Director will serve as direct supervisor of the Livestock Enterprise Manager, Dairy Enterprise Supervisor, Equine Enterprise Manager, and the Mann Valley Farm Laboratory Manager. In addition, there are four University Staff members and the DIH Research Specialist at the Mann Valley Farm who support the dairy herd, equipment operation, and DIH research programs. All farm staff are essential in creating a positive and educational environment for the student workforce, which consists of approximately 60 students each year.
Excellent interpersonal communication and mentoring skills are necessary for interacting with a variety of stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, industry partners, and members of the community. Self-starting abilities, strong problem solving and organizational skills along with a positive attitude toward faculty, staff, students and the public are required for this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualifications Required:
- Demonstrated interest and ability to provide effective farm management in an educational environment
- Demonstrated budget management skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff
- Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff and students
- Strong problem solving, analytic and organizational skills
- Self-starting abilities are essential
- Strong Interpersonal skills to develop relationships with multiple stakeholders
- Working knowledge of U.S. production agriculture
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to ensure compliance with animal welfare protocols rules and regulations
- 5 years of experience with and/or expertise in two or more of the following areas:
- Dairy
- Beef, Sheep, Swine, or Poultry
- Equine
- Agronomy
- Precision Agriculture
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license for authorization to operate university vehicles
Qualifications Preferred:
- B.S. degree or master's degree in an appropriate discipline
- Experience in an academic setting is a plus
- Experience with facilitating applied research and grant projects/laboratory classrooms/field trials
