The University of Michigan School of Information seeks qualified tenure-track faculty candidates (open rank) to broaden existing scholarship within the school and the U-M community in the area of racial justice in computing, technology, and policy, with a particular emphasis on the domains of data and AI. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to: critical data studies, critical algorithm studies, algorithmic inequality, science and technology studies, intersectional analysis of digital labor and precarity, racial capitalism and platform studies, the economics of race and racism, social implications of data-driven systems, technology policy, and the ethics and politics of computing. We especially welcome scholars who engage with the intersections of racial justice, data, digital technology and critical race/ethnic studies, Black studies, intersectional feminisms, decolonization and postcolonial studies, transregional and global studies, disability studies, Indigenous studies, and trans studies.
This position is part of a new faculty cluster focused on Racial Justice and Technology, and will include three faculty (one each from the Ford School, the School of Information, and Stamps School of Art and Design), with additional support for cross-school collaborations within the cluster. The cluster is part of a university-wide faculty hiring initiative in anti-racism. The university is in the process of hiring at least 20 faculty members with scholarly expertise in the aforementioned areas.
The successful candidate should demonstrate potential for or experience with publication and research funding, for collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives, and for working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Job duties include research, teaching, and service. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conducting scholarly research resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, edited books, books, and conference proceedings
- Seeking outside funding to support their research program
- Teaching in UMSI's five academic programs
- Mentoring students for independent studies, master's projects and theses, and doctoral dissertations
- Providing service to the school, University, and the broader academic community by way of committee work, journal editing, and other various opportunities
Each contributing member of the UMSI faculty is expected to have teaching effort equivalent to three semester-long courses per year.
- Ph.D. in an area such as information, race and/or ethnic studies, science and technology studies, social or computer science, or a related discipline
- A strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
- A strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and cultural diversity
- A record in teaching and research
