CENTER FOR TRANSFORMATIVE ACTION MISSION
The Center for Transformative Action brings together students, business and nonprofit leaders, policymakers, and other community advocates to strategize, collaborate and build effective organizations and models to create economic opportunity, environmental justice, and social equity.
We provide thought leadership and link our constituents to support services, education, and advocacy initiatives in the pursuit of lasting, vibrant change in our communities and society. As an amplifier, convener, and partner for organizations and people that are actualizing social justice and equity, the CTA hosts events throughout the school year with our flagship annual conference being the marquee gathering.

POSITION
The Center for Transformative Action (the Center) at Mills College brings together students, thought and business leaders, policy makers, and others to share ideas for building profitable, sustainable organizations and effective nonprofits to address social, environmental, and policy problems. The Director leads and manages the activities of the Center, including event planning and coordination, fundraising and revenue generation, budget management, external relations and partnerships, supervising student workers and other duties as assigned.
The Director works closely with the Community to Community (C2C) Impact Accelerator on implementing summer youth programming, organizing mission aligned convenings, and extracurricular programming for the students.
The Director actively promotes the Center to various stakeholders and audiences including potential partners, funders, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit companies, as well as prospective students and the general public.
The Director updates Lokey Dean and key stakeholders on Center activities and initiatives on a regular basis and provides recruiting support for current and prospective students interested in Center activities.
Essential Job Functions Strategy Formulation:
- Works with the Dean and other stakeholders to formulate Center strategy and identify relevant opportunities.
- Budgeting and Operations:
- Manages day to day operations of the Center;
- Develops new sources of revenue for the Center;
- Aid with implementation of C2C initiatives, helps to promote C2C activities to the Oakland campus community;
- Submits proposals for student positions;
- Provides recruitment, training, and supervision of student workers consistent with Northeastern University's hiring practices;
- Provides tracking of Center activities including budgeting and impact measurement (number of student hours, value of contracts, etc.).
- Visibility and Communications:
- Provides leadership and external outreach for the Center;
- Manages external communications of the Center including social media profile;
- Participates in events that help increase internal and external visibility of the Center;
- Manages annual conference and post conference communication (including conference survey);
- Crafts Center communications to update various stakeholders including students (e.g., though Updates), partners, and donors;
- Engages in relationship building for the Center and documentation of Center; partnerships as well as collaborates with other college offices to formalize and manage such partnerships;
- Manages and promotes Center events including annual conference;
- Represents the Center in appropriate student and alumni events as needed;
- Helps admissions utilize the Center in recruiting efforts, e.g., talk about extracurricular activities at Admitted Student Events, invite students from Bay Area schools to attend various events (e.g., Pitch competitions, etc.);
- Aids the school/college in partnership building (talk to potential partners about the role of the Center);
- Provides regular reporting on outcomes of Center activities (including department head reports, annual report, and reports for individual sponsors).
- Fundraising:
- Leads and documents annual conference fundraising efforts with foundations and private donors;
- Maintains and shares database of Center contacts and potential donors with Lokey Dean and the Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA);
- Collaborates with OIA and the External Grants and Gifts team to secure, manage and report on donor and grant support.
Additional Responsibilities and Other Details:
Performs other duties necessary for the management and promotion of the Center as assigned.
Teaching:
If academically qualified, teaches up to two courses per year for extra pay if there is a need as specified by the College Dean.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications: Graduate degree required; Ph.D. preferred. Previous history with organizing convenings, event fundraising, and public speaking. Experience with hiring and managing student workers is a plus. A record of accomplishment working with diverse audiences and stakeholders is desirable. Strong preference for applicants with ties to Mills College at Northeastern University and the broader Oakland community.

The expected hiring range for this position is $$73,535 to $93,755 based on the position's responsibilities and scope.
