Departmental Overview
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned teaching and research facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, over 11,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. With a collection of more than 13 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.
The Library's Social Sciences Division (SSD) is comprised of librarians, library career staff, and student library employees who together support the teaching and research needs of students and faculty in twelve social science departments within the College of Letters & Science, six professional schools, three International and Area Studies programs, and an array of Organized Research Units.

Responsibilities
Circulation Supervisor:
- Hires, trains, supervises, approves payroll and executes reprimands and dismissals of SLEs in the Environmental Design Library.
- Creates weekly schedules for SLEs and trains to assist with daily operation, processing and other tasks when required.
- Serves as the evening & weekend supervisor for all Social Science Division units.
- Sets performance expectations, monitors performance, provides corrective action, and recommends employee selection, corrective action, and dismissals.
- Participates in appropriate library-specific groups, i.e. Circulation Supervisors Group and relevant Alma expertise groups, and serves as functional expert in circulation for SSD.
Technical Processor:
- Provides technical support as needed to the SSD Tech Lead.
- Supports outreach functions of the Environmental Design Library including creating and maintaining LibGuides, exhibits (online and physical) and library events.
Required Qualifications
- Effective supervisory skills.
- Commitment to public service, assisting students, faculty, staff and members of the public.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- English language proficiency to communicate orally and in writing with persons of various backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently, including solving problems and making decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to display a calm demeanor when assisting users or other employees and/or while under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Competency with standard office software and equipment (spreadsheets, Google Docs or Word, etc.).
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a library.
- Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, scheduling, and/or performance management.
- Experience with an integrated library system.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $59,000.00 - $61,000.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
