Departmental Overview
The Department of Integrative Biology studies the evolution of life from molecular, functional, and ecological perspectives. Faculty of the Department work on organisms from across the tree of life, in the laboratory, field, and museums. The Department has launched an ambitious curriculum improvement initiative, which embeds discovery based inquiry at the center of our undergraduate major experience.
We are seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Biology Course Development Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of Dr. Robert J. Full and in coordination with the Discovery curriculum team of faculty, staff and postdocs to support the Discovery for All: Empowering Inclusive Communities in Integrative Biology initiative. The candidate will contribute to catalyzing curricular and instructional change in biology through training workshops and individual coaching, with an emphasis on enhancing discovery-based learning at all stages of our undergraduate program in biology. The Biology Course Development Specialist will also be responsible for coordinating and conducting assessments of biology education initiatives, with a specific focus on inclusive pedagogy and the transformation of biology classes to discovery-based learning. The ideal candidate will possess creativity in curriculum development, strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills, excellent presentation skills, have experience in coding interviews, and demonstrate a deep understanding of inclusive pedagogy in science education.

Responsibilities
Course Transformations and Training
- Collaborates with faculty and instructors to identify areas for transformation in course design, teaching strategies, and assessment practices and adapts or creates course materials.
- Advises instructors in determining the best pedagogical methods for transforming course content and delivery in a discovery-based curriculum.
- Provides pre-, within- and post-semester support to faculty to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
- Designs, develops, and delivers comprehensive workshops and training sessions for faculty members focused on integrating discovery-led approaches into biology curricula.
- Conducts literature reviews to stay up to date with the latest research and innovations in biology education, assessment methods, and inclusive pedagogy.
- Applies project and program management practices for assisting multiple courses.
Course and Program Assessment
- Conducts Needs Analysis of existing courses and evaluates the effectiveness of the department's discovery-based learning transformation program.
- Develops assessment tools, surveys, and interview protocols to collect quantitative and qualitative data from students, faculty, and other stakeholders.
- Analyzes assessment data, including faculty interviews, using quantitative and qualitative research methods, including coding to consensus and statistical analysis.
- Complies with research ethics and privacy regulations and assists with amending and/or development of Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions.
- Prepares comprehensive assessment reports and synthesizes course and program level accomplishments for IRB, funding requirements, department curricular decisions and publications.
Campus Partner Collaborations
- Collaborates with other recipients of Discovery grants, the Faculty Directors, Berkeley Discovery team, and partners across campus to promote campus-wide discovery-based learning and share best practices.
Professional Development
- Stays current with advancements in biology education, discovery-led teaching methodologies, and assessment techniques through continuous professional development.
- Attends conferences, workshops, and seminars related to teaching and assessment to bring innovative ideas to departmental training programs.
Required Qualifications
- Strong background in biology education, with a deep understanding of inclusive pedagogy and the principles of discovery-based or inquiry-based learning.
- Strong skills in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective delivery of pedagogical training in biology or STEM fields.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and accessible manner.
- Ability to lead and facilitate workshops, fostering a collaborative and engaging learning environment.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing assessments in an educational or research setting.
- Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems; i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Education software; i.e., CANVAS, dynamic student response systems (e.g. 'clickers'), Qualtrics.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Science Education, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced understanding of research ethics and regulations governing the collection and use of human subject's data.
- Familiarity with assessment tools, survey design, validation techniques and interview protocols.
- Experience in coding and analyzing qualitative data, such as interviews, focus groups, and open-ended survey responses and/or experience with quantitative research methods in biology education.
- Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Biology, Science Education, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 1yr, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension with continued funding. This is a monthly paid, exempt position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100.00 - $105,000.00.
