Departmental Overview
The UC Botanical Garden is a unit of the Berkeley Natural History Museums administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Garden's broad mission is to develop and maintain a diverse collection of plants in support of the University's missions in teaching and worldwide research in plant biology. Additional major roles include conservation of plant diversity and promoting public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment, through many Garden activities, including through a diverse array of public education programs.
The Garden is a living museum with one of the most diverse plant collections in North America. A priceless resource for international research, conservation and public enjoyment, the Garden covers 34 acres nestled in Strawberry Canyon. The Botanical Garden is open to the public, of whom many (>5500) are Garden members.

Responsibilities
Membership:
- Under general supervision, exercises limited discretion and professional judgement in implementing established components for membership relations programs and activities; or plans, administers, and implements a well-defined or established membership program requiring the exercise of limited discretion and judgment.
- Administers all aspects of membership, including receipt and documentation of checks and credit cards, using the constituent date base.
- Responds promptly to telephone, email, and in-person inquiries regarding membership.
- Please and implement membership drives benefits and promotions.
- Keeps Visitor Services apprised of new promotions.
- Prepare and mail renewals and a-reminders on a monthly schedule.
Database Management:
- Responsible for keeping in-house database current and ensuring compatibility with University wide CADS database.
Development & Membership Events:
- Create and manage member events, including exhibit previews, appreciation days and members' only programs.
- Assist in designing recruitment program for members.
- Coordinate retention of members as identified.
- Coordinate on and off camps membership and prospect cultivation events.
Membership Communications:
- Drafts informational and marketing materials for review for assigned programs.
- Support the creation of all membership materials, including web, and campaign.
- Prepare, edits and send invitations, reminders, thank-you notes, e-blasts etc.
- Draft routine correspondence.
- Develops and maintains reports, providing basic analysis of membership program trends, and short- and long-range results.
- Monitors and documents program activities and results.
Advisory Counsel and Major Gifts:
- Support the Director/Head of Development to manage the Garden's Advisory Council, and Major Gifts program - organizing meetings, preparing and distributing materials.
Administrative Support:
- Assist in developing materials for specific fundraising activities and/or promotional efforts as writing, speaking, telephoning, et cetera, as needed.
- Handles special project/assignments involving direct interaction with members and donors.
Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
- Good organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrated success in membership development, fundraising, or similar work.
- Proficiency with CRM database management.
- Ability to multi-task and work both with minimal supervision and in collaboration.
- Problem-solver with good judgment, discretion and time- management skills.
- Ability to work at or attend occasional evening or weekend events.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn about the campus, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $39.27 -$41.18. This is equivalent to $81,995.76 - $85,983.84 annually.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
