The Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for an appointment as Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Human Development with experience closely mentoring undergraduate students in research, writing, and thesis preparation. This position will be a part-time, term-limited teaching position offering opportunities for both classroom teaching and mentoring students on research projects. The lectureship is limited to a term of two quarters, beginning Winter Quarter 2024 and ending Spring 2024, and is non-renewable.
The Department of Comparative Human Development (CHD) at the University of Chicago is an interdisciplinary department whose faculty includes anthropologists, biologists, linguists, psychologists, sociologists, and methodologists whose theories and methods cross individual social science disciplines. Research in the department explores the social, cultural, psychological, and biological processes of change that vary across time, across individuals, across societies and cultures, and across species. During the academic year the Lecturer will teach one course: B.A. Honors Seminar, in Spring 2024, to Comparative Human Development 3rd year undergraduate students in data analysis and thesis writing. In addition to teaching, the Lecturer will closely mentor the 4th year students who are finishing their Honors B.A. paper and help them prepare for their papers presentation at the end of year conference.
The Lecturer will also serve as preceptor to the CHD undergraduate major in the College by being the point of contact to the undergraduate students in the CHD undergraduate program. The preceptor's duties would be:
● hold weekly office hours to advise CHD majors
● Assist the Director of Undergraduate Studies in determining and confirming that all CHD majors have completed their program requirements
● Hold departmental open house sessions
The position also offers opportunities to participate in the intellectual life of the Department and the University.
Applicants must have a PhD in a social science such as anthropology, sociology, or psychology and experience working in an interdisciplinary field. Prior teaching and advising experience in one of these disciplines or a related field is required.
