Departmental Overview
Berkeley IT is powered by problem solvers who deliver services and support to drive the campus experience. The Network Services Team is a part of Berkeley IT's Campus IT Infrastructure Department. The team empowers students, faculty and staff by providing them with access to the tools, resources and information they need. We do this by implementing, managing and maintaining services such as Internet connectivity, Wi-Fi throughout campus and high speed connectivity to support research.

Responsibilities
- Plans and architects large-scale local and wide-area networks. Makes decisions and / or recommendations based on analysis of data and information. Performs analysis techniques, up to and including the most complex and advanced. Coordinates all phases of multiple, complex network projects: planning, design, procurement, implementation and documentation. Consults with users/departments to determine communication needs. Implements related business processes.
- Initiates or recommends large-scale communications and network system changes, up to and including the most complex. Develops proposals for new services. Consults with other units and directs, initiates and designs broad scope networking solutions to meet the needs of research, teaching and administration at the campus and with external partners.
- Resolves network issues at the detailed protocol level involving multiple systems, up to and including the most complex and advanced. Ensures that campus network connectivity is operating as designed. Develops and oversees implementation of appropriate network monitoring and measurement for campus and regional networks. Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to resolve critical network issues as they arise. Participate in a business hours network incident response team to resolve second and third tier escalated issues.
- Anticipates technical needs for the unit, develops plan and coordinates professional training.
- Supervises, develops and evaluates the performance of a team of professionals to ensure the communications and networking services needs of the campus are met in a timely and cost effective manner.
Required Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of professional communications concepts in the completion of complex and diverse assignments.
- Expert knowledge of the principles and practices within the field.
- Demonstrated ability to apply highly developed technical skills and knowledge to improve the effectiveness of the function.
- Expert understanding of core networking protocols including a thorough understanding of all OSI layers.
- Experience successfully applying protocols to independently solve networking problems, up to and including the most complex.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate to all levels within the technical, academic and management community at the campus / medical center / OP and relevant external organizations.
- Experience and ability to represent the operational and strategic interests of a complex organization to communities interested in using, providing services to or interconnecting with campus / medical center / OP networking services.
- Understands implications of work in other areas.
- Clearly understands the communications and network needs of the organization and has skills needed to address those needs.
- In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts campus / medical center / OP-wide network users.
- Expert knowledge and experience working with network management systems.
- Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
- Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated expert problem-solving skills for the most complex situations.

- Experience leading a team of data networking professionals.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $117,000.00 - $175,000.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
- This position is eligible for flexible and full-remote work (telecommuting) based on candidate availability and business needs.
