Position Summary
St. George’s is seeking an experienced middle school educator to cover a parental leave in the Middle School Social Studies Department starting November 6, 2023, through March 5, 2024. This teacher would follow unit guides and textbook resources to plan and teach two sections of 5th Grade Geography, two sections of 6th Grade Ancient Civilizations and one section of 7th Grade American History, following an alternating block schedule. This substitute will also meet daily with an 8th grade Advisory and supervise students throughout the week at lunch and carpool duty. They will report directly to the Director of Middle School.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Help students master the concepts and skills outlined in St. George’s social studies curriculum.
- Develop engaging, student-centered lesson plans for children in 5th - 7th grades and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with complex learning profiles.
- Monitor student growth by providing a variety of ongoing assessments.
- Meet regularly with a mentor teacher to develop unit and lesson plans.
- Consult with Resource Specialists and other teachers to support students’ educational needs and optimize student growth.
- Communicate frequently with parents and guardians to build trust and establish a team approach.
- Foster student learning by including students in their educational plans, and lead students to use their own critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Guide classroom behavior through respect and a positive approach.
- Use Google Classroom and Alma gradebook software to post assignments and grades.
- Sit in on January parent-teacher conferences to communicate students’ progress and needs with parents and the teaching team.
- Manage time to meet deadlines and adhere to a daily schedule, and structure classes to maximize opportunities for student learning.
- Mentor students in a small-group advisory program.
- Be an active member in the life of the St. George’s community.
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education or Social Studies.
- Experience working with middle-school-level students (in a classroom setting is preferred).
- Knowledge of social studies curriculums, resources and assessments.
- Philosophy that focuses on hands-on, student-centered learning.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications including but not limited to Gmail, Calendar, Google Classroom and Drive (Docs, Sheets, and Slides).
- Ability to use an online student information system, various educational platforms and safety/communication applications on a chromebook, iPad and/or a smartphone.
- Familiarity with using copiers, printers, document cameras and presentation screens.
- Ability to work well in a team and collaborate.
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills which prove effective in communicating with parents and establishing a team approach with the child’s family.
- Excellent knowledge of child development, latest education theories and practices and current trends in education and professional development.
- A desire to respond to and initiate the solving of problems through clear and open conversation.
- A growth mindset; openness to feedback and an ability to take risks.
- A strong interest in pursuing professional development opportunities; a dedication to lifelong learning.
- A sense of integrity and ethics and an ability to carry out responsibilities in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures.
Working Conditions / Physical Demands:
- Must be physically able to operate computers and office equipment.
- Occasional bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling and twisting; constant walking, speaking and listening; close visual attention to the computer.
