Departmental Overview
The Graduate Division's Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Teaching and Resource Center oversees the preparation of all GSIs campuswide for the teaching they will do at Berkeley and in future careers. The vast majority of Berkeley's 12,000 graduate students teach while pursuing their graduate degree programs, and all of these graduate students participate in programs offered by the GSI Teaching and Resource Center.
The Center's work is guided by the policies of the Graduate Council and its Advisory Committee for GSI Affairs. The Center Director reports to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division.

Responsibilities
Student Services Advising
- Applying advanced student services concepts and technical skills, provides the most complex student services to the GSI Teaching & Resource Center, management, departments, faculty, and students.
- Interprets and applies Graduate Council Policy on Appointments and Mentoring of GSIs in advising graduate students, faculty, GSAOs, and departments campuswide on requirements for GSI preparation for teaching.
- Manages the Certificate of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education program, a program that integrates requirements fulfilled through Center programs and courses and activities provided by departments.
- Independently identifies and customizes technical system for tracking program requirements and integrating completion data with campus systems.
- Monitors student progress, tracks completions, advises on requirements and requests for exemptions.
- Conducts outreach to certificants to promote completion of program.
- Makes recommendations to Assistant Dean for improving administration and management of Certificate program and all of the Center's programs that intersect with the Certificate program, including GSI Teaching Conference, the online Professional Standards and Ethics course, and Workshops on Teaching.
- Monitors and responds to GSI Teaching & Resource Center email.
Manages Student Services for Language Proficiency Program
- Provides advising on standard, policy-related questions to international graduate students and administrative support to the Language Proficiency Program.
- Identifies and customizes online systems to efficiently schedule and manage data for language proficiency testing program.
- Assesses language proficiency records and advises graduate students and Graduate Student Affairs Officers on University policy and appropriate procedures to meet Graduate Council language proficiency requirements.
- Identifies cases where exemptions may be warranted and refers these cases to Assistant Director for Language Proficiency for review.
- Acts as resource to Graduate Student Affairs Officers on testing-related policy and procedures.
- Makes recommendations to Assistant Director for Language Proficiency to improve and streamline business processes.
- Monitors and responds to Langpro email.
Program and Event Management
- Plans, implements, and manages complex, high-visibility student events including the Teaching Conferences for new GSIs (mandatory for all 1400 new GSIs each year), the Summer Institute for Preparing Future Faculty, the competitions and ceremonies for the Outstanding GSI Award, the Teaching Effectiveness Award, and the Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSIs; the Faculty Seminar on Teaching with GSIs, the Workshops on Teaching Series, the Fall Meeting of Faculty Advisers for GSI Affairs, and our annual Workshops on Teaching Series.
- Independently identifies new systems for delivering center events and new systems for program evaluation.
- Creates streamlined electronic processes for award nomination submission and evaluation process.
- Independently identifies, negotiates, and reserves appropriate campus venues; solicits and negotiates competitive bids from caterers and other event vendors; designs event decor, menu, and protocol; estimates, tracks and reports event expenses and manages event budget.
- Identifies and implements improvement based on participant feedback and departmental evaluation.
- Solicits and schedules VIP attendees including Deans and Chancellor's Office participation.
- Processes payments for vendors, workshop leaders, and awards recipients.
- Oversees development of improved business and event management processes and procedures for all of the Center's programs.
Course Scheduling
- Oversees scheduling and manages enrollment for all Graduate Student Professional Development (GSPDP) and Language Proficiency (Lan Pro) courses.
- Advises graduate students and departmental student affairs officers on requirements and qualifications for academic courses. Screens students for eligibility for language proficiency courses.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques to work effectively with graduate students, GSAOs, and faculty.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs, resource platforms, and student information systems.
- Knowledge of computer application systems that can be employed to streamline scheduling and for the delivery and tracking of program requirements.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
- Advanced Interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, colleagues, GSAOs, faculty, and Graduate Division senior management.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations, including multilingual international students.
- Advanced knowledge of policies pertaining to international graduate students.
- Superior ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Skills in monitoring processes or services to make improvements.
- Advanced knowledge of billing and accounting procedures needed to process payments through BearBuy.
- Advanced knowledge of how to use and adapt electronic systems to streamline event execution.
- Advanced knowledge of Graduate Council policies pertaining to GSI appointments.
- Extensive experience in successfully executing large-scale events.
- Superior skills in data management.
Education/Training.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Experience or training in project and program management.
- Training in data management programs.
- FERPA training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100.00 - $97,400.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
