Job Title:
Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Sociology - Archeology or Cultural Anthropology
Department:
Anthropology & Sociology
Job Description:
The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Rhodes College invites applications for a broadly trained archaeologist or cultural anthropologist. This tenure-track position will begin fall of 2024. Rhodes College believes that diversity and inclusion are critical to our success as an institution, and we seek to recruit, develop, and retain people from a diverse candidate pool.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, and scholarship at a liberal arts college. We seek a candidate with expertise in at least one of the following areas, environmental anthropology/archeology, medical anthropology, and community-engaged anthropology/archeology, who can contribute to our departmental strengths in justice-centered pedagogy and the study of social inequality. Our department welcomes public scholarship and community-engaged teaching and research. Teaching responsibilities will include five courses per year, and the person in this position will be expected to contribute to teaching our core major requirements as well as offer courses in their areas of specialization. We encourage applications from individuals whose interests go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, and in particular from candidates who can contribute to one or more of the following interdisciplinary programs: Africana Studies, Archeology, Asian Studies, Educational Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Latin American and Latinx Studies, Media Studies, and Urban Studies. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in Anthropology by July 2024.
Rhodes is a nationally ranked residential college committed to the liberal arts and sciences. Our highest priorities are intellectual engagement, service to others, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and honor among ourselves. Our students live and learn on one of the country's most beautiful campuses, located in the heart of Memphis, an economic, medical, and culturally diverse center, making Rhodes one of a handful of prominent liberal arts colleges in a major metropolitan area.
Rhodes College prides itself on being a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and anti-discrimination.
Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews. For further information, please contact Dr. Earl Wright II, search committee chair, at (wrighte@rhodes.edu) wrighte@rhodes.edu.
A complete application will include 1) a cover letter that addresses the strengths the candidate will bring as a teacher and scholar to a liberal arts college environment; 2) a curriculum vitae; and 3) a separate statement that addresses how your experiences with teaching, scholarship, and/or service will contribute to a college community that includes a commitment to diversity and inclusion as one of its core values. In addition, under Additional Documents, you must include 4) a separate statement of teaching philosophy. Review of completed applications will begin November 1, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. The names and contact information for three references may be requested at the committee's discretion.
