Join our community and experience Emerson College!
The Marlboro Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies (MILAIS) invites applications for a tenure-line open rank position in African-American studies. A Ph.D. in History and/or Africana Studies is required. The candidate will teach African-American history from the colonial period to the present and contribute to the minors offered through the Marlboro Institute. Candidates with research and teaching focus in the areas of Black Disability Studies, Carceral Studies, Black Queer Studies, or other innovative areas of study are especially encouraged to apply. The appointment begins August 22, 2024 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2024.
Emerson College believes the pathway to achieving inclusive excellence and fostering a campus climate where everyone can thrive is only possible in an authentically equitable, accessible, and socially just environment. As a community of storytellers, we continually strive to cultivate a community that draws upon the widest possible pool of talent, fully embracing individuals from varied cultures, races, abilities, gender identities, sexual orientations, linguistic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, life experiences, nationalities, perspectives, beliefs, and values. Please articulate in your cover letter how your pedagogy and research upholds these commitments.
MILAIS is the home for the interdisciplinary major as well as a wide variety of liberal arts minors. Curricular innovation is encouraged at Emerson, and course design can be very flexible. The candidate should have experience in innovative and effective college-level teaching, developing new coursework and curricula, and an ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Teaching interests that complement MILAIS programs - the Honors Program, the Emerson Prison Initiative, and/or one or more liberal arts minors - would similarly be an asset.
