The UCLA Department of Urban Planning invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track, open-rank faculty position in Urban Design and Real Estate Development. We seek a colleague whose research examines the connections between design and real estate development and is interested in teaching courses in both these areas. We expect them to be known, or soon become known, for their field-defining scholarship in design and real estate development. We welcome scholars with domestic and global perspectives. The ideal candidate will be able to teach studio-based courses and train professionals and scholars who can respond to the urban challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century by advancing spatially, socially and environmentally beneficial outcomes. Our department has a long tradition of being attentive to social equity; we encourage candidates who will continue that tradition. Candidates for the position are expected to hold a PhD or comparable terminal degree in architecture, planning, urban design, engineering, economics, finance, law, or other related field at the time of appointment.
The selected candidate will also have an opportunity to play a leadership role in UCLA's proposed one-year Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program. This new degree program will be based in the UCLA Department of Urban Planning, and students will have opportunities to take courses across the campus. The MRED has received approval from UCLA and is awaiting systemwide review and approval from the University of California's Office of the President. We anticipate launching the program in 2024-25 and welcoming our first cohort of students in Fall 2025. The MRED program will situate real estate development training within the broader context of urban policy, institutions, politics, and design. Its goal is to provide rigorous training in the fundamentals of real estate development and the effects of real estate development processes, practices, and outcomes on neighborhoods, cities and regions.
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table 1. The salary range for this position is $74,600-$197,100. 'Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
