General Summary: The Middlesex Community College Adult Learning Center seeks to fill various part-time instructor positions. The need is for dedicated instructors to work inclusively with students of diverse identities and backgrounds. Subject areas may include Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Digital Literacy; preparation for the High School equivalency exams (GED or HiSET;) as well as basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to qualify for further education, job training, or better employment. Some classes are offered 3 mornings per week using a hybrid format and other classes are offered in the evenings using a remote format.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach English Language Arts skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) or Mathematics to a diverse population of adults
- Integrate civics education, science, social studies and digital literacy into the English Language Arts lessons
- Prepare and develop lessons aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adults.
- Attend trainings for EBRI (Evidence Based Reading Instruction) and implement this instruction accordingly
- Become familiar with and adhere to all Dept. of Education expectations for grant funded Adult Basic Education programs
- Use available technology, differentiated instruction, and formative assessments to enhance lessons
- Create a classroom culture that is motivating, inviting, safe and supports students in their academic and social-emotional growth
- Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve personal practice, classroom instruction, assessment and student success; as well as to achieve the overall goals and mission of the program
- Attend and participate in staff and program development meetings
- Participate in required ACLS (Adult and Community Learning Services) trainings and conferences that support Professional Development
- Communicate regularly with the program coordinator and director regarding student issues, and other problems or concerns
- Adhere to all protocols and norms for communication, e.g. checking email, phone, etc. on a regular basis
- Maintain accurate records, e.g. attendance, timesheets, lesson plans, etc.
- Remain current with essential program related information, e.g. HiSET, GED, Links, MCC resources, etc.
- Interact appropriately and professionally with staff, students, visitors, and all members of the college and the community
- Fulfill all outlined and related functions in a professional, timely, and thorough manner
- Perform other related duties as needed and requested
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree
- Previous teaching experience
- Ability to interpret and implement the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Willingness to use a variety of software programs and to keep up to date with new technology as needed
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- Self-directed, enthusiastic, reliable, and creative
- Comfortable working as a team player to enhance the overall success of the program
- Ability to accept constructive feedback from administrative staff
- Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- Previous experience teaching adults
- Bilingual skills a plus
- Experience with synchronous online teaching and learning
- Experience with Google Classroom
Additional Information:
Pay Rate: $33.00 per hour for teaching, prep time, meetings and professional development
Location: Bedford Campus with occasional travel to Lowell Campus as needed
Typical Hours: Average 18 hours per week to include teaching time, lesson preparation, meetings and professional development. Typical teaching hours are 9am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays or teaching from 6pm - 9pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. All classes run September through May.
