POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN CIVIC EDUCATION AND DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY
The School of Education at the University of California - Riverside (UCR) is searching for a post-doctoral researcher to start January 2024 in the areas of education, youth civic engagement, and political science. The position could be remote. The position will involve research on two projects. First, and primarily, the post-doctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Professor Joseph Kahne and in collaboration with Professor Kevin Esterling, both at UCR, and project partners at the Ohio State University and Brown University. The post-doctoral position will be part of an IES funded project called Connecting Classrooms to Congress, which is developing and testing a social studies curriculum module that enables high school students to study a pressing issue - one that policymakers at the national level are grappling with - and then discuss that issue with their sitting member of Congress through an online deliberative town hall. In addition, the post-doctoral scholar will have the opportunity to work on a study of the implementation and impact of a curriculum for 8th graders designed to further the Educating for American Democracy roadmap. This curriculum is being tested in districts in five different states.
The successful candidate will have a PhD or EdD in education or other relevant field as well as the demonstrated ability to conduct qualitative research linked to topics that include 8 -12 social science, youth civic learning, culturally responsive teaching, political socialization, educational equity, deliberative democracy, dialogue across political differences, localized curriculum, and curriculum implementation. There will also be opportunities for quantitative research if desired. This post-doc position will enable the individual to be part of developing and publishing cutting edge research tied to the fields of civic education, social studies education, and deliberative democracy.
Candidates with experience and expertise teaching high school, working in public schools, delivering professional development, engaging in diverse school and community contexts, and advancing equitable and culturally responsive educational practices are highly desired. We also seek candidates who can demonstrate an ability to work within and contribute to a diverse campus environment. The appointment can begin on January 1st, 2024 and could extend for up to 24 months. This appointment can be remote, but the post-doctoral scholar would have to be able to travel for occasional meetings and for data collection.
