The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Journalism, De Anza College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
As a member of the Language Arts Division reporting to the division dean, the candidate selected for this position will primarily be responsible for (1) teaching required courses in mass communication and journalism and (2) serving in an advisory capacity for our campus newspaper, La Voz News.
As a Journalism instructor, the candidate will teach core courses including news and feature writing for print, broadcast, and online formats, copyediting, production, public relations, and mass communication with a commitment to integrating multicultural and global perspectives. In addition, an instructor must be able to:
- Maintain current knowledge in the discipline, including the use of new technology tools for news gathering and new platforms for dissemination.
- Equip students with basic media literacy and communication skills, including identifying and evaluating news sources, conducting interviews, verifying and attributing information, and using images including videos and informational graphics.
- Foster in students an understanding of ethical integrity and First Amendment rights and responsibilities as a basis for sound news judgments and editorial decisions.
- Serve in an advisory capacity for the Student Publications Center; this will involve advising the student newspaper staff and other student publications intended to serve a diverse college community, coordinating student editorial teams for La Voz, overseeing the design and production lab for primarily online editions, and overseeing advertising and other business processes.
De Anza College is looking for a leader to provide vision for our Journalism Program who will work collaboratively with faculty in the Student Publication Center and in related programs such as Communication Studies, Film/TV, digital media, multimedia, photography, advertising, and public relations to develop curricula and certificate programs responsive to both student demand and the needs of our college and local communities; assist in the recruitment of part-time faculty; and participate in general faculty functions related to the program (including serving on appropriate college-wide committees, convening annual meetings of the Journalism Program Advisory Board, and attending staff-development/flex calendar activities). This assignment will include both day and evening hours.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include developing and evaluating curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, serving on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to grow professionally and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- Master's degree in journalism or communication with a specialization in Journalism or Bachelor's degree in either of the above AND Master's degree in English, history, communication, literature, composition, comparative literature, any social science, business, business administration, marketing, graphics, or photography OR the equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of two years recent and relevant community college teaching experience.
- Proven ability to teach face-to-face and online college-level mass communication and journalism courses based on current practices and theories.
- Recent professional experience in broadcast, print, or new media.
- Knowledge of traditional and new media and commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Experience revising and developing college-level curricula and managing budgets.
- Experience working with developing writers and editors in a deadline-driven environment.
- Experience planning strategically, providing leadership, and working collaboratively with internal and external service providers and partners.
- Ability to model appropriate media ethics and journalistic practices for the college community.
- Able to teach student journalists Associated Press style, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop.

HIRING RANGE: $71,934.90 - $133,543.60 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
