The Weissman Center for Leadership is dedicated to supporting Mount Holyoke College students to develop the skills and strategies they need to become inspiring and influential leaders. We define leadership broadly, knowing that each student will find their path to influence and change their world.
The Office of Community Engagement (formerly known as the Community Based Learning)pairs Mount Holyoke students, faculty, and staff with local leaders to collaborate on internships, research, and community engagement projects that have a direct, positive impact on the local communities. Students learn from on-the-ground practitioners and come to understand how to apply the ideas, theories, and models they learn in class. A Community Engagement experience at Mount Holyoke College breaks down the barrier between the classroom and the real world, enhancing students’ understanding of current social issues, both locally and nationally, and helping them grow the leadership, organizing, and advocacy skills that are vital to creating change at all levels.
The Assistant Director develops students as engaged scholars who value and contribute to our neighboring community. Create opportunities to engage in leadership development and community engagement. The position provides transformative opportunities to complement high-impact teaching, learning, and research at Mount Holyoke College’s goals of preparing graduates to engage with the world and contribute to local and global big questions. The Office of Community Engagement will align with Mount Holyoke’s commitment to antiracism and social justice. Our office is committed to engaging our students, faculty, and staff in Principles of Equitable and Reciprocal Community Engagement.
This position requires skills in planning, budgeting, program development, and evaluation, along with specific experience in student employment supervision and compliance, staff support, community engagement principles, social justice praxis, and the ability to support campus-to-community partnerships.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: - Student Staff Supervision and Support
- Coordinate, conduct and establish short- and long-range planning activities aimed at the student development learning in leadership
- Work with CE student leaders (Program Facilitators, Adm Fellows, Community Fellow, and Course Mentors to plan and implement year-long office learning outcomes and goals.
- Assist with the development of action steps to accomplish the office’s semester- and year-long goals
- Meet with Student Employees to support their learning outcomes
- Create Professional Development Plan with students as required by the CDC
- Create professional development opportunities and engage in independent learning to enhance knowledge base, areas of expertise and an understanding of theories and practices as it relates to Community Engagement
- Advise the newly developed student group Community and Reciprocal Engagement) (C.A.R.E)
- Train students in MHC systems (Embrak, LITS, Google Teams, Asana, EMS, etc)
- Write student recommendation letters as needed
- Other duties as assigned by CBL Director - (Essential)
- Cross Campus Collaborations programs initiatives related to community engagement-
- Attend Cross Campus Meetings with Student Life, Res Life, Student Orgs, Be-Well Center, DEI, etc for collaborative opportunities
- Design and facilitate training opportunities a cross-campus relating to the Spectrum of Service and the Office of CE philosophies and field pedagogies in the field for both on and off campus stakeholders including but not limited to, leadership retreats, roundtable CE dialogue, panel discussions, workshops, seminars, guest speaker series, publications, etc
- Supervise and execute AY 23-24 New Programs “Alternative Spring Break” creating an off campus learning, volunteering, mentoring or tutoring experience during Spring Break, One Book One Child new initiative with the Holyoke School district that focuses on literacy. Community Engaged Summer Justice Scholars-this is a continuation of our piloted summer experience , etc
- Supervise execution of pre-orientation program “From Volunteering to Just Actions” for incoming first-year students
- Supervise a portfolio of on-going office programs, including weekly recurring programs and monthly programs
- Director and Assistant Director will continually evaluated and re-evaluate existing programs to ensure MHC students’ experience is distinguished and robust
- Support Faculty Director -
- Support FD in the rebuilding of Faculty interest in the Community Engaged in Scholarly work
- Support FD research-based guidance to faculty on pedagogies, curricula, and partnerships
- Support FD in coordinating CE specifically outreach and marketing of events aimed at Faculty Development
- Support FD in promoting CUSP course in the Spring
- Other duties as assigned by FD

Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in a related field Proven experience advising, mentoring, coaching, or supervising college students • 3-5 years of progressive experience in higher education administration or related organizational experiences • A commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus • Cultural competence, cultural humility, and experience working with students from various identities and lived experiences • Experience supporting International, BIPOC, First-Generation and Low- Income, LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, etc • Broad knowledge of issues and trends impacting undergraduate students in higher education • Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships, including connections to local non-profit and social justice organizations. • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as attention to detail • Ability to manage productivity platforms (Google, Asana, Motion, Canva, etc) • Proven affinity for students, and a desire to participate in service oriented, social justice • Flexibility and the ability to handle multiple priorities • The willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends Preferred Qualifications: • Master's degree in Higher Administration Education or related field • Expertise in providing social justice, diversity and inclusion, group facilitation, training design, and curricular resources • Experience, knowledge, or understanding of what it means to work at a gender-diverse women’s college License/Certifications: Compliance Requirements: |
