Departmental Overview
Office of the Registrar (OR) supports every registered student, as well as all the faculty and staff who interact with them. We are committed to helping students discover an academic path that fulfills graduation requirements and that augments and enriches their education beyond the boundaries of their degree program. We are stewards of student data, and are responsible for maintaining the integrity of every academic record. We work with the schools, colleges and departments, and IT system groups to ensure adherence to policies, regulations and procedures as mandated by the UC Regents and the Faculty Academic Senate; accuracy of data; and to provide access and security for the curriculum, academic records and other data needed to fulfill Berkeley's academic teaching mission.

Job Summary:
The Business Systems Analyst (BSA) for the Comprehensive Curriculum Management System (CCMS) resides within the Office of the Registrar and is dedicated to increasing the usability of and integration between the various systems and process workflows on campus related to curriculum management, including the Student Information System (Campus Solutions), the Academic Senate's degree and course approval process, and the Academic Guide (catalog), the course scheduling system (25Live), and the Academic Progress Report (degree audit) systems.
The Business Systems Analyst has primary and technical responsibility for all aspects of curriculum management. One of the central objectives is to implement and leverage the newly acquired Integrated Academic Operations Platform (CCMS) and the Student Information System's enterprise application (PeopleSoft Campus Solutions) and associated applications in the end-to-end process for evaluation, implementation, tracking, and reporting of curriculum management. Some of these workflows include coding courses, requisites, restrictions, grading options, course repeat rules, final exam course attributes, building out historical courses, analyzing and resolving EAP and study abroad courses, faculty grading option coding, and co-manage the academic structure within Campus Solutions. Performs integration testing to ensure that courses flow properly via API and creates queries in response to campus inquiries regarding curriculum management and enrollment.
The CCMS Business Systems Analysts' technical understanding of the curriculum management module as well as academic scheduling, registration, and the degree audit, is key to ensuring the harmonious integration of these components. The CCMS Business Systems Analyst assists the University Registrar in assessing current curricular processes and workflow, curriculum management policy review, as well as implementing efficiencies and policy recommendations through best practices, innovation, and technology. Due to the interdependencies between courses and curricula that span the academic senate, academic departments, and colleges and schools, the incumbent provides analysis to impact changes in policies and improve efficiencies. As a campus resource, this highly visible position provides and communicates solutions on a wide range of issues to a varied constituency. The incumbent prioritizes day-to-day responsibilities with long-term projects in a deadline-driven environment.
The CCMS Business Systems Analyst position serves with a high degree of autonomy as the primary analyst and architect as well as the technical work lead within the Office of the Registrar in analyzing the large-scale business processes and problems involved in curriculum review and management and leveraging curriculum data to support academic planning and new initiatives within departments or campus leadership. This includes developing solutions involving the use of enterprise application systems (Campus Solutions) and the CCMS; maintaining expertise in system workflows and architecture; creating specifications for systems to meet requirements; validating requirements against needs; designing details of automated systems; developing user interface design; planning and executing unit integration and acceptance testing. This position also leads cross-functional teams to solve complex business or systems issues and will work closely with the Student Information Systems teams, the Academic Guide Editor, the Central Evaluation Unit, the Academic Senate, the Registration team, the Academic Course Scheduling teams, and other OR BSAs, as well as determine service upgrade/improvement needs.
This is a remote-eligible position.
Responsibilities
- Performs highly complex analysis of business and user needs, documentation of requirements and translation into proper system and process requirement specifications.
- Creates and maintains instructional materials, tutorials, and other documentation.
- Provides advanced support, change management communication, and training on new applications and policy recommendations.
- May lead a team of business analyst professionals.
- Performs highly complex analysis to develop report requests and recommendations for campus stakeholders (including Senate faculty and senior leadership).
- Initiates, facilitates, implements and documents work process changes.
- Prepares and approves or obtains approval for business process and procedural documentation.
- Initiates and oversees changes in processes and procedures.
- Applies advanced business analysis concepts to identify, evaluate and define highly complex systems scope and objectives based on advanced knowledge of applicable business practices, processes and systems and industry standards to meet end-user needs.
- Works at the highest technical level of various phases of systems analysis.
- Considers the business implications of applying technology to the current and future business environment.
- Initiates, designs or modifies highly complex systems and procedures where standardized policies or procedures may or may not exist.
- Creates highly technical specifications for systems with broad impact on Berkeley students and faculty.
- Develops unit integration and acceptance testing plans and scenarios.
- May lead cross-functional teams to address complex business or systems issues.
- Collaborates with a cross-functional team of campus colleges to develop policy recommendations and new features or troubleshoot system issues.
- Sets the technical requirements for complex specifications.
- Assumes additional projects and responsibilities in response to emerging issues.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending conferences and workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in user groups; benchmarking best practices.

Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
- Advanced skills and methodologies associated with process and software design, modification and implementation.
- Demonstrated skills needed to develop process and system implementation plans.
- Demonstrated experience engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds, or incorporating diverse perspectives into their work.

- Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in higher education (preferably working with curriculum and/or system implementation) or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of related areas of IT.
- Knowledge relating to the design of processes and software across the organization.
- Experience with APIs, ability to parse content from the course API, Class API, etc.
- Demonstrated experience with process analysis, systems analysis, process architectures and systems analysis methodologies and practices including traditional waterfall, Agile, Agile Scrum, UML, UML Enterprise, et cetera.
- Understanding and skill in complex process and systems requirement documentation standards, such as Use Case modeling, User Story creations and narrative description.
- Skill in conducting interviews, specifically to elicit business requirements and understand user experience.
- Advanced degree in a related area such as higher education administration, student affairs, management, or leadership and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $116,000.00 - $136,700.00. The full salary range for this position is $95,300.00 - $178,100.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
- This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for between 50% - 100% remote capability.
