Responsibilities
The Department of Anthropology at Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct to teach an upper division World Cultures course focused on Ancient Civilizations. The instructor is expected to provide a broad introduction to the region as well as focus on specific issues/groups through the use of ethnographies and other case studies based on area of expertise. Candidates should be comfortable in a student-centered teaching environment with an interactive learning style. Work in a highly collaborative and cultural diverse classroom environment. Strong commitment to undergraduate, liberal arts education.

Course Description:

Ninety-nine percent of human cultural development took place before the advent of written records, and therefore archaeology is the primary source of knowledge of these cultures. This course focuses on the practices of prehistoric people, such as how they made stone tools, decorated cave walls, organized their villages, domesticated plants, and built monuments like Stonehenge. Special attention is given to topics such as gender, kinship, religion, and art. Students also learn how cross-cultural comparisons of ancient civilizations have led to insights regarding the emergence of cultural complexity, city life, social classes, and other modern social phenomena.

Requirements:

1) A PhD or ABD in Anthropology or Archaeology is required for applications to be considered.

2) Demonstrated success in teaching anthropology/archaeology courses at the college level

• Candidates should also demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate, liberal arts education; be comfortable in a student-centered teaching environment with an interactive learning style; comfortably work in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse classroom environment. Strong commitment to undergraduate, liberal arts education.

Candidates must reside in California.

Salary: $9,929-$13,744 dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
