The Blake School seeks an energetic, collaborative and reflective Middle School Social Studies teacher who is eager to help students learn. The successful candidate may be an experienced, early career or pre-service teacher with a degree in a related field and demonstrated interest in working with middle grades learners. This is a 1.0 FTE interim position for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year, with the possibility of an ongoing appointment. We are seeking a teacher who can start no later than Jan 2, 2024.
They will be responsible for teaching two sections of 8th grade US history post-WWII and three sections of 6th grade Modern Global Issues & Geography (units on UN Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Declaration of Human Rights). For both courses, the teacher will follow the lead of a partner teacher and help co-design lessons and assessments for student understanding and growth.
Blake’s social studies department guides student inquiry about contemporary issues by asking, “How did we get here?” We do so by drawing from best practices in project-based learning, historical thinking skills and media literacy to develop foundational skills in reading and writing, research and academic conversation.
We are eager to meet candidates who have experience working with adolescents to foster a community committed to pluralism, curiosity and empathy. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity and lived experience that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences. Blake provides substantial resources for professional learning in areas including adolescent development, learning differences and intercultural competence. We welcome candidates who have non-traditional experience as educators and who are eager to grow and translate their capacities as designers of learning experiences into the traditional classroom.
We are in the process of reviewing applications and will continue to accept them until the position is filled. Blake will cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.
