Departmental Overview
Physics is the largest department in the L&S Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. It is ranked as one of the top physics departments in the world, with excellence in research, teaching, and service to the community all highly valued. The department has 80 ladder and active emeriti faculty, 60 career and casual staff, and 300 lecturers, teaching assistants, readers, research personnel, postdocs, fellowship recipients, and visiting scholars. It enrolls 250 graduate students, 250 undergraduate majors, and over 7,000 students in its courses, many with laboratory sections. Its faculty fully participates in teaching and administration and conducts world-class research in campus, local, national, and international laboratories and sites; research activities require active financial arrangements with organizations such as Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Physics manages 3 distinct campus buildings in its facilities complex with 240,000 assignable square feet, and it also houses and provides services to several research centers, the Physics Library, and multiple research Laboratories with varying physical environments. It has an active fundraising program.
This role is responsible for overseeing and implementing special projects that are complex and nuanced in nature for Nobel Laureate Saul Perlmutter, Professor of Physics, Director of the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics, and Faculty Director of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science. It includes strategic planning, fundraising, managing human resources and budgets, developing and executing communication strategies, advocating and advising on sensitive matters, and representing Professor Perlmutter's initiatives to internal and external audiences. The position requires a high level of independence and initiative to successfully perform work of a highly confidential nature to support the Nobel Laureate on numerous projects of national and international significance. Collaborates with Professor Perlmutter to keep key initiatives on track, supervising personnel as needed, ensuring seamless administrative functionality, and inspiring others related to these activities to perform at their highest level individually and as a team.
The position supports the Nobel Laureate in achieving strategic solutions with high-level stakeholders as they relate to his scientific research activities, scientific policy efforts, and education initiatives at UC Berkeley, LBNL, SSL, and beyond. Effective communication between these internal and external constituencies is critical to the success of his current and future projects and requires a demonstrated record in creative and collaborative problem solving, diplomacy, discretion, and trustworthiness. Maintains and builds relationships and partnerships with institutions such as the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Harvard University, Kavli Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, National Academy of Sciences, NASA, Nobel Prize Outreach, National Science Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Space Telescope Science Institute, U.S. Congress, U.S. Department of Energy, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, The White House, and others. Responsible for working collaboratively with Professor Perlmutter and liaise with these entities and staff at UC Berkeley and LBNL to identify compelling strategies and advance his projects involving science education, data science, basic research, and large cosmology projects.

Responsibilities
- Manages complex programs, new and existing, to implement long-term, sustainable results for Professor Perlmutter's work in education, research, and service to science. Researches and formulates strategic solutions with high-level stakeholders as they relate to his scientific research activities, scientific policy efforts, and education initiatives at UC Berkeley, LBNL, SSL, and beyond. Identifies compelling strategies and advance projects involving science education, data science, basic research, and large cosmology projects.
- Identifies, advises on, and pursues funding opportunities and/or revenue streams that align with Prof. Perlmutter's priorities. Writes grant reports and proposals in consultation with relevant colleagues. Conducts thorough analysis of budget, program goals, and available resources and advises on development of the infrastructure necessary for successful execution. Develops tailored proposal to secure future support from a funder for a major initiative, building on relationships that have been nurtured with the Lawrence Hall of Science and with high-level, international stakeholders. Provides strategic planning, fundraising, managing human resources and budgets, developing and executing communication strategies, advocating and advising on sensitive matters, and representing Professor Perlmutter's initiatives to internal and external audiences.
- Executes best practices in strategic communications. Effective communication between these internal and external constituencies is critical to the success of current and future projects and requires a demonstrated record in creative and collaborative problem solving, diplomacy, discretion, and trustworthiness.
- Exercises prudent judgement and independent initiative in handling the details of complex and highly sensitive matters on behalf of Prof. Perlmutter as they relate to his initiatives. Maintains and builds relationships and partnerships with institutions such as the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Harvard University, Kavli Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, National Academy of Sciences, NASA, Nobel Prize Outreach, National Science Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Space Telescope Science Institute, U.S. Congress, U.S. Department of Energy, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, The White House, and others.
- Supervises Executive Assistant. Ensures that Prof. Perlmutter's administrative needs are being addressed in a professional, timely, and thorough manner.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced analytical/problem-solving skills. Strong ability to learn quickly and think strategically about organizational capacities and find ways for projects to run smoothly in complex organizational environments.
- Strong skills to communicate and influence effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, alumni/donors, students, and external constituents, both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all levels of the Campus as well as the Office of the President and external constituencies.
- Ability to develop new organizational structures, processes, and policies in accordance with emerging strategies.
- Highly skilled in project management.
- Experienced writing for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experienced developing presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Advanced advising and counseling skills.
- Direct experience with high-level scientific research projects and familiarity with 'Big Science.'
- Ability to manage others effectively and with cultural sensitivity, particularly in a non-hierarchical environment (experience with management styles that utilize persuasion rather than using authority to achieve collaborative goals and solutions).
- Ability to deal with the unexpected in a calm and collected manner to foster and maintain a friendly and productive working environment. Ability to function well under pressure and take quick and effective action.
- Ability to embrace creative approaches in resolving policy or interpersonal dilemmas.
- Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
- Ability to use a high level of discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Advanced knowledge of campus processes, protocols, and procedures.
- Detailed knowledge and ability to interpret and apply Federal Government, University of California and local laboratory policies and procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of scientific laboratory governance, policy and planning at the University and National Levels.
- Advanced knowledge of common campus-specific computer applications.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $115,000 to $140,000 annually. This is a 80% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
