Assistant Professor, Mathematics (71102)

Description:
Pratt Institute, a renowned educational institution for art, design, and architecture, is seeking an exceptional full-time tenure track Mathematics faculty member, at the rank of Assistant Professor with a distinguished background in both mathematics teaching and a strong body of public-facing work in the realms of mathematical-art, mathematical modeling, civic data analysis and data visualization. Pratt has made a commitment to sustainability as a focused aspect of our work. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring educator and an innovative creator, experienced in merging mathematical concepts with creative and sustainable art and design, expression, and practice.
Applicants must have a PhD in Mathematics, Statistics or a related field with knowledge of, and expertise in mathematical art or creative analysis and visualizations of data. The successful candidate would 1) bring historical and philosophical perspectives to the conjunctural studies of science, technology, and the social sciences; 2) help our student population to improve their mathematical and quantitative reasoning through teaching General Education and elective courses in their area of specialization; 3) demonstrate global and historical awareness. Areas of specialization may include, but are not limited to a) history and philosophy of mathematics, b) mathematics as social justice c) mathematical art and design d) environmental justice, f) big data and artificial intelligence, g) sustainability.
The Department of Mathematics and Science provides students with the critical skills that expand how they perceive their intellectual, artistic, and professional work. With several large-scale research projects in materials science relevant to the arts, agriculture, and the environment, the department also houses the Pratt STEAMPlant, an interdisciplinary incubator.

Position Responsibilities Include:
- Teach six courses per year (3 courses per semester).
- Teach current General Education and elective MSCI courses, and develop, teach, and assess new mathematics or transdisciplinary courses.
- Contribute to the development of mathematics courses, introducing modules that emphasize the exhibition of mathematical creations.
- Participate in committee work and other service to the Department, School, and Institute.
- Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- Develop and maintain scholarly and professional standing in the field of expertise and
- pursue individual research projects (e.g., publish in peer-reviewed scholarly journals and
- present at professional conferences).
Salary, Benefits, and Faculty Support
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The salary range for this position is $82,500-87,500. Pratt Institute provides a comprehensive benefits package with the flexibility to meet the varying needs of a diverse group of individual employees.

Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated expertise in mathematics education, complemented by a strong portfolio of public-facing math-art and/or data visualization projects.
- Proven experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and a passion for merging mathematical concepts with design, artistic expression.
- Track record of exhibiting mathematical artwork and projects at national and international venues.
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment to fostering a culture of artistic expression and exhibition within the mathematics department.
