Duties & Responsibilities
The Theater / Stage Technician will be an on-call member of the professional staff that will perform a variety of tasks involved in stage production including; audio engineering/system set-up and support, lighting installation/focus, light board operation, follow spot operation, projection system operation, staging/equipment installation and operation for scheduled events. This is an on-call position. The work schedule is assigned based on the event schedule. Some evening and weekend work required.
Essential Job Duties
- In collaboration with production directors, oversee the design and execution of all technical aspects of all major Arts productions in the Adam Z. Rice Theater (ART) and off-site locations
- Lighting support for scheduled performances and events for RHP. Work in collaboration with the theater department to execute light hangs, focus, strike, and restoration of all production lighting equipment. Operate light boards for select events. Operate follow spot for select events.
- Audio support for scheduled performances and events for RHP. Work in collaboration with production staff to execute audio load-ins, sound checks, performances, strike, and restoration of all production audio equipment. Operate sound consoles for select events.
- Perform the physical duties necessary for the set-up and strike of all scheduled events.
- Ability to apply advanced technical skills in event support and services.
- Ability to evaluate and apply standard techniques, tools, materials, procedures and/or equipment to accomplish tasks.
- Expertise and experience in adequately troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, modifications, upgrades, repairs, etc.
- Manage pre- and post-production services: Work with production directors to create checklists, plans, and timelines for design, build, and strike for all Arts productions
- Ability to use hand tools and electronic instruments and repair equipment as needed.
- Proficiency in the operation of theatrical technical equipment including lighting instruments, dimmers, follow spots, lighting control surfaces, audio consoles, microphones, wireless microphone systems, and projection systems.
- Effective problem solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner, and collaboratively as part of a team.
Other Considerations:
- Dates of major events: November 28 - December 13, 2023; March 4 - 20, 2024; May 20 - June 7, 2024 (additional dates may be added)
Key Qualifications:
- High school graduate and 2-3 years of relevant experience
- Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre, Theater Tech / Design, or a related field preferred
- Experience with lighting design, sound design, sound operation.
- Familiarity with current Theater software programs such as Creston Systems, EOS and ETC Ion family lighting consoles, Qlab, Isadora, as well as Vectorworks, Google Apps and Mac OS X. Experience with Creston Systems is a plus
- Expertise and experience in adequately troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, modifications, upgrades, repairs, etc.
- 2 years teaching experience in middle and/or high school preferred
- Experience with set design, set construction, lighting design, sound design, and sound operation
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience coordinating multiple ongoing projects with a clear head and grace under pressure.
- Has a valid driver’s license
- Able to work extended hours including evenings and weekends when necessary
- Supervise and maintain positive relationships with contracted labor, volunteer parents, and student crews
- Mentor and instruct students with an interest in technical theater in areas: lighting design and rigging, sound design, projection design and realization, stage management and rehearsal etiquette

Physical Demands and Work Environment
- This job is performed in a multi-building school environment indoors and outdoors) with stairways
- Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, including moving stage sets and props, audio equipment and lighting equipment. Agility to bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Demonstrate the ability to practice and adhere to organizational values.
- Must pass a federal and state fingerprinting and background check and provide a recent negative TB test or assessment
- Must provide proof COVID 19 vaccination
