Job Summary: The Teacher is responsible for developing curriculum and lesson plans, and presenting those lessons to their students, individually or in groups. Tracks the progress of students and creates reports to inform parents of the progress. The Teacher may work with graduate students and faculty to implement research projects, or supervise interns and practica students.
Additional Department Summary: Will develop and implement a model pre-kindergarten program in partnership with an Auxiliary Teacher to support overall development based on the strengths, needs, and interests of each child. Plans and implements developmentally appropriate activities for children in line with the First Class Pre-K Program and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Collects high-quality child assessment data through daily documentation and uses this information to inform instruction. Works with faculty and undergraduate/graduate students in the College of Education. Supervises interns and practica students. Models teaching practices for early educators. Develops and maintains strong connections with families.
This position will be contingent on student enrollment, grant requirements, and funding.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and at least one (1) year experience in education. Certification to teach in Alabama may be required, based on assignment.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, human development and family studies, or special education and two (2) years of experience in classroom (birth to 3rd grade).
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to plan and implement high-quality, developmentally appropriate child-centered curriculum. Ability to develop programming consistent with First Class Pre-K Program grant requirements and developmentally appropriate practices as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Ability to utilize curriculum and assessment tools to support the overall growth and development of each child. Understanding of the organization of confidential documents, as well as effective communication, both written and verbal, is required. Ability to work with diverse populations and understanding of utilizing a strength’s-based approach. Understanding of supervisory skills and/or mentoring skills. Willingness to participate in the planning and implementation of research projects and developmental initiatives in line with the program’s mission to be a model site.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in early childhood education. Alabama Class B or A Early Childhood Certification (Birth –3rd grade). Five (5) years of early childhood teaching and management experience to include some work with birth through five year-olds. Experience with developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum, authentic assessment, and early childhood center oversight. Knowledge of NAEYC and/or Quality Stars experience. CPR certification. Training in Teaching Strategies GOLD and Conscious Discipline. Experience with classroom supervision or the mentoring of developing teachers. Experience designing and implementing culturally sensitive family engagement activities.
