Princeton University
Post-Doctoral Research Associate "Truth and Information," 2024-25. Princeton University's Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Study is pleased to announce openings for a year-long position as a residential Postdoctoral Research Associate, renewable for a second year, contingent upon satisfactory performance. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be expected to work on a topic related to the theme chosen by the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for academic years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026: "Truth and Information." The successful candidate will work on the historical evolution of regimes and practices of establishing, telling, and writing truth. We understand the notion of truth broadly: as a philosophical and epistemological category, an ideal of social equity and political justice, and a principle governing historical writing, legal, and scientific investigation. We invite historians who study the role of ideology, religion, informational technology, and media in the historical evolution of truth. We are also interested in projects on the history of lying, deception, and misinformation. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the use and misuse of facts in political propaganda, problems of evidence and objectivity, authenticity and source criticism, fakes, forgery and conspiracy theories, and diplomatic, inter- and intra-national reconciliation. We are especially interested in candidates whose work also addresses issues of race, gender, and imperialism. Applications are welcomed from a range of historical fields, with no restrictions on either chronological period or geographical region. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be engaged in full-time work on the proposed historical project during the period of the appointment and will not have teaching or administrative responsibilities. The position is strictly residential, as the Postdoctoral Research Associate will also participate in all of the Davis Center's weekly activities (along with the Center's faculty-level fellows). Please note that the Shelby Cullom Davis Center will also be conducting a separate search for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Study. Interested candidates may apply for both positions. The initial expected term of appointment is July 1, 2024-June 30, 2025, with renewal possible for a second year, contingent upon satisfactory performance. The appointment will be made through the Department of History. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will receive a competitive salary along with University benefits and an annual research fund of $5,000. Applicants must apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/31781. Applicants should submit a letter of application, a CV, a research statement, a writing sample of no more than 10,000 words, and the contact information for three referees who will be asked to provide letters of recommendation. Applicants who have not yet received the Ph.D. must also provide a letter from their dissertation advisor indicating that they are on track towards completing the doctorate by the start of the Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Applications received by January 5, 2024 at 11:59 pm EST will receive full consideration. Referees will have until January 19 to submit their letters. Information about the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies can be found at http://history.princeton.edu/centers-programs/shelby-cullom-davis-center. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
