NYU Florence is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course on gardens and landscapes in Tuscany.
This course is designed to provide students with a history and appreciation of gardens and landscapes of Tuscany from the early Roman period to the 21st century. The design of the Italian landscape and gardens will be examined from different perspectives: as a site of cultural exchange, environmental sustainability, architecture, landscape design etc. Emphasis will be placed on historical precedents, sustainable design technologies utilized in Italian gardens, and classic Renaissance design concepts. The course format incorporates lectures, class presentations, on-site visits, and field trips.
Course Objectives
- To deepen understanding of Italian Garden history, establish the use of a standardized design vocabulary, and improve ability to present complex ideas in-class presentations.
- Recognize and analyze classic works of Renaissance and Renaissance revival garden design.
- Apply the design techniques of historical and contemporary gardens to current environmental challenges.

A strong candidate will have a Ph.D. or its equivalent in a relevant field: History of Art, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urbanistic Planning, etc. It is expected that the post-holder will ideally have 2 to 3 years of experience teaching at the university level. Candidates who have experience in teaching within an American university system to a diverse undergraduate student body are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be eligible to work in Italy. Candidates should present demonstrated experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity and a teaching approach informed by global and local perspectives.
