Job Summary:
The Department of History at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure track position in History (Public History) at the assistant professor level beginning August 2024. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in History with experience in the teaching and practice of Public History. While the time period and geographical region of specialized area of research is open, preference will be given to applicants with additional expertise in global or environmental history. Candidates must have a promising teaching and scholarly agenda and have completed their Ph.D. by the time of appointment (ABD candidates will be considered).
The ideal applicant will demonstrate a potential for excellence in teaching and working with undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include teaching survey courses in global history, public history, and developing upper-level course within the area(s) of specialization suitable for undergraduates. This could include interdisciplinary teaching opportunities in related programs. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a strong background in any current or emerging areas of public history, experience in teaching, as well as a publication record that embraces interdisciplinary themes, digital technologies, and/or public-facing scholarship. The department is particularly interested in candidates who can teach in a diverse university community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate history courses each year and maintain a 4/4 course load of in-person instruction;
- Participate in curriculum and course development and revision/updates to the History curriculum;
- Advise and mentor undergraduate students;
- Establish a record of research productivity proportional to experience in any of the areas mentioned above;
- Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community; and
- Participate in on-campus department, college, and university meetings and assemblies, as well as university convocations and graduation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in History historical-grounded and related field (conferred by the time of appointment); ABD candidates will be considered;
- Strong commitment to teaching a full-time load of 4/4 course load per academic year which may include interdisciplinary courses;
- Write and speak English proficiently;
- Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes;
- Demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students;
- Evidence of potential for an active research agenda within the area of the applicant's expertise in public history;
- Demonstrate a commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population;
- Demonstrate ability and willingness to work collegially; and
- Engage actively with the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to teach a range of courses in Public History, core curriculum offerings, and focused upper-level courses in sub-field areas;
- Research interest in global or environmental studies;
- Experience in mentoring and advising HBCU students in coursework, thesis development, and internships;
- Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area;
- Experience developing / offering experiential learning opportunities (e.g. undergraduate research, service learning, participatory action research, internships);
- Direct experience with museums, archives, or other public history sites or projects;
- Developed and active research agenda of scholarly and public-facing work that complements existing department research; and
- Willingness to play a lead role in developing curriculum and programming in public history, expand opportunities for student engagement, and contribute to service activities for the department, university, and community.

Xavier University of Louisiana, founded by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in 1925, is Catholic and historically Black.
