The Department of History at Georgia State University (downtown Atlanta campus) invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latino/a/x History. The department welcomes applications from scholars whose work focuses on any aspect of the history of people of Latin American origin or descent in the United States. The position will begin in August 2025. Successful candidates are expected to develop an independent research agenda, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise and mentor students, and participate in institutional service activities. Tenure-track faculty typically teach a 2-2 course load, developing upper-division undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in History and supervising graduate research for the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. They will also periodically teach an introductory survey course in US History from colonial times to the present. The department invites applicants with a passion for teaching and mentoring students like those who attend Georgia State. The successful candidate may also have the option to hold interdisciplinary affiliations or joint appointments with other departments (such as World Languages and Cultures or the Center for Latin American Studies) as appropriate.

A doctorate in history or a closely allied discipline, awarded by date of hire, is required. We prefer candidates with coursework and research experience that demonstrates the training and ability needed to conduct and publish scholarly research in area of expertise; to direct graduate research in area of expertise; and to teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate courses in area of expertise. Candidates are expected to establish and maintain a successful research program; teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; train doctoral students in the historical method; and participate in department, college, and university life. A criminal history check is required.

These documents are needed to apply: 1) a Cover Letter (2 single-spaced pages); 2) a CV; 3) a Research Statement (2-3 single-spaced pages) that includes a narrative of past, current, and future scholarship; 4) a Teaching Statement (1-2 single-spaced pages) that provides a sample of the topics/subject areas in which the applicant would develop upper-division and graduate-level courses; 5) the names and email addresses of three potential references. Letters of recommendation written by references will be requested for applicants who are long-listed by the search committee and will be required to provide a writing sample.
