Description:The Business Ethics and Society Program (BESP) in the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business (MCOB) seeks a Research Professor (open rank; non-tenure-track).
BESP is an initiative in MCOB that seeks to explore the philosophical and theological contributions to an understanding of business in a just and humane society. It comprises several distinguished faculty from various disciplines, a dedicated undergraduate minor called 'Business and the Common Good,' and a growing number of students from a range of business majors. It complements students' major studies and partners with undergraduate and graduate units both within MCOB and throughout the University.
Because BESP is not a tenure-granting department, the Research Professor position would have teaching expectations and performance expectations similar to those of tenured and tenure-track faculty in relevant humanities fields. We are also open to joint appointments within the Mendoza College or in other departments on campus, at the discretion of the other unit. This position is not tenure-stream and would have renewable term contracts. Some summer teaching may be possible in some years, but not required.
In addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate would also be expected to participate in the BESP community, working with its faculty and students to develop a flourishing educational and social environment. Activities with colleagues might include planning and attending guest lectures and conferences, participating in workshops, and identifying and recruiting visiting faculty. Activities with students might include alumni engagement, mentoring, information sessions and recruiting, and planning and attending various extracurricular activities.
Qualifications: An ideal candidate would have:
A PhD in philosophy, theology, business ethics, or a related field;
An active program of scholarly productivity that bears on business ethics and a demonstrated ability to publish in business or business-related fields;
Experience teaching interdisciplinary courses, including at the intersection of fields such as moral philosophy, moral theology, business ethics, economics, law, and Catholic social thought;
A degree from or experience teaching in a business school;
Enthusiasm for working with and mentoring business students in a mission-driven institution.
This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate. The full procedure can be viewed at https://facultyhandbook.nd.edu/?id=link-73597.

The University of Notre Dame was founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a French missionary order. It is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, the center of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 315,000. Chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844, the University was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious trustees and fellows.
