THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Washington State University campus in the Tri-Cities (WSU Tri-Cities) is recruiting four outstanding tenure track faculty at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to join the newly established Institute for Northwest Energy Futures (INEF). INEF is an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to recruiting talented new faculty, leveraging existing expertise across the WSU system, and collaborating with research partners, including the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), to address the increasing demands for resilient and reliable advanced energy solutions in the Pacific Northwest region. This cluster hire initiative includes the four faculty positions listed below, based at WSU Tri-Cities, as well as two additional positions in Critical Mineral and Power Electronics at WSU Pullman and one in Nuclear Engineering at WSU Tri-Cities, which are being advertised separately. Establishing this cross-campus connection will enable the INEF to deploy the full resources of the WSU system, fostering collaboration and leveraging resources. We are seeking candidates with expertise in the following areas:
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): To evaluate the environmental impact of advanced energy technologies from raw material extraction and manufacturing to installation, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life disposal or recycling.
Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA): To analyze the economic feasibility, scalability, and risks associated with advanced energy technologies and initiatives.
Energy Data Analytics and AI (EDA):
To integrate data analytics and artificial intelligence methodologies to advance research and education in advanced energy systems.
Energy Policy (EP):
To analyze existing local, state, federal and international regulations and policies for energy technologies and to identify modifications and new policies needed for the continued development, deployment and operations of advanced energy technologies.
Different search committees will evaluate the applications; please clearly indicate in your cover letter which of the four positions or areas you are applying for. We encourage candidates from varied backgrounds, including engineering, social sciences, economics, data science, and natural sciences. Faculty appointed to these positions will hold a tenure-track appointment in an appropriate academic department, with teaching and service responsibilities shared between INEF and the respective department. We envision the cluster working at the intersections of academic units to build interdisciplinary and dynamic programming. Given the close collaboration between INEF and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), it is expected that successful candidates will have the ability to apply for security clearance from the U.S. Department of Energy and/or PNNL, as this may be necessary to access restricted areas and resources.
