Reporting to the Lower School Head, The Calverton School in Huntingtown, Maryland is seeking a part-time or full-time Lower School Reading Interventionist for the 2025-26 school year. We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Reading Interventionist to join our dynamic educational team. The Reading Interventionist will play a crucial role in supporting students who require additional assistance in developing their reading skills. The candidate will work collaboratively with administration, teachers, parents, and other support staff to implement effective intervention strategies and promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that aligns with Calverton’s mission, values, and strategic vision.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Conduct assessments to identify students with reading difficulties.
Analyze assessment results to determine specific areas of need.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to align interventions with classroom instruction.
Conduct small group reading sessions to provide targeted support.
Use evidence-based instructional strategies to improve phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
Regularly assess and monitor students' progress.
Adjust intervention plans as needed based on ongoing assessments.
Maintain accurate records of intervention sessions and student progress.
Provide regular updates to teachers, parents, and administrators on students' growth.
Stay current with research and best practices in reading intervention.
Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding student progress and intervention strategies.
Possess experience and a passion for working with lower school students and find joy in supporting their overall academic, social, emotional, and ethical development
Create a caring classroom community through thoughtful relationships with each student and family
Provide engaging, diverse, and student-centered learning experiences and have solid pedagogical practice to drive joyful and hands-on learning focused on skill, inquiry, and confidence-building
Promote principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in both curriculum and classroom culture
Engage actively in professional development – individual and school-wide – and bring a growth mindset to furthering knowledge of best educational practices
Attend all divisional, departmental, and school faculty meetings including professional development days
Participate broadly in the life of the school by attending events, chaperoning, supervising, advising, coaching, and sponsoring clubs
Bachelor's degree in Education, Reading, Special Education, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
Credential, graduate degree, or extensive course work in reading instruction, special education or learning differences required.
Experience with Orton-Gillingham preferred.
Minimum of 2-4 years teaching experience.
Knowledge of multi-sensory teaching methodologies.
Strong organization and time-management skills
Proven experience in providing reading intervention or specialized literacy instruction.
Knowledge of various assessment tools and strategies for identifying reading difficulties.
Enthusiasm for working with lower school students

Proficient user of technology
Collaborative and effective communication in working with students, teachers, administrators, and families

Must pass Federal and State background check along with MSDE Employment History Review
The Calverton School a college preparatory, day (and now boarding) school located in Huntingtown, Maryland, approximately 45 minutes east of Washington, D.C. and 30 minutes south of Annapolis, MD. The school enrolls 270 students in Preschool through Grade 12, and offers the IB program for 11th and 12th grades. All of the school’s graduates are accepted into four-year colleges and universities. Students come from five counties, including Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's, Anne Arundel and Prince George's.
