Job Description:
COU 790 School Counseling Internship (3 credits).
This course is a fieldwork supervisory experience in which students complete an internship in a school setting and assume the varied roles of professional school counselors. The internship allows students to acquire and apply the skills and dispositions necessary to translate content knowledge into the art and science of effective counseling practice.
This course is a fieldwork supervisory experience in which students complete an internship in a school setting and assume the varied roles of professional school counselors. The internship allows students to acquire and apply the skills and dispositions necessary to translate content knowledge into the art and science of effective counseling practice.
The course instructor fosters the development of analytical and evaluative skills, helping students integrate content knowledge with practical counseling experience to enhance both professional and personal competence. During the internship, students demonstrate and are evaluated on their mastery of the core counseling curriculum, which provides a strong foundation in knowledge, skills, professional sensibilities, and applied experiences.
In addition to direct student contact hours through individual and group counseling, interns are expected to develop, implement, and evaluate key school counseling program components. Per New York State regulations, school counseling interns must complete a minimum of 300 hours in Grades K-8 and 300 hours in Grades 9-12 across their internship experience. For the described semester, students may acquire hours at either the K-8 or 9-12 levels.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate (or ABD) in Counselor Education.
- Background in School Counseling, such as New York State certification and/or graduate-level training in school counseling.
- Demonstrated effective teaching and supervisory skills, particularly applicable to fieldwork and internship courses.
Job Specific Qualifications:
- Certification as a New York State School Counselor is preferred.
- Experience as a school counselor and demonstrated effective teaching and supervisory practices that can be applied to a clinical internship course.
Responsibilities:
The instructor is required to:
- Meet weekly with students for class (i.e., group supervision).
- Develop and deliver lesson plans.
- Provide feedback on students counseling recordings and process notes.
- Offer both formative and summative evaluations of student performance in both counseling and programmatic areas.
- Communicate with site supervisors and program coordinators as needed.
- Complete written evaluations and required paperwork for the Unit of Counseling and Human Services and CACREP accreditation purposes in a timely manner
AND
- Develop/update the course syllabus in accordance with SOE standards
- Ordering in advance books and materials for students in the class to purchase on or before the first day of classes.
- Preparing for classes
- Holding office hours each week for students in the class and others
- Supervising the class students tutoring activities
- Grading in a timely manner student assignments and examinations for the course
- Completing CACREP competency assessment reports (if required)
- Turning in mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University standards
