About the Department:
The Antonin Scalia Law School strives to be a national leader in legal education, applying tools of economics and other social sciences to the study of legal doctrine, process, and institutions. The Law School prepares students to practice law in a broad range of public and private sector organizations within the Commonwealth and around the country. In addition, it produces academic scholarship that expands society's understanding of law and legal institutions with a special focus on using economic tools and methods to do so.
About the Position:
The primary purpose of law faculty is to provide effective teaching to Juris Doctor students, produce original scholarly works for publication, and provide service, including leadership, through participation in governance, and operational or development activities in the Law School, the university, and/or the legal profession. Additionally, in accordance with ABA law school accreditation standards, law faculty share with the dean the primary responsibility and authority for planning, implementing, and administering the program of legal education; selection, retention, promotion and tenure of faculty; and determining educational policy.
Responsibilities:
Teaching:
Designs course curricula, prepares for classes, available for consultation about those classes, assesses student performance in those classes, and remains current in subjects being taught in accordance with ABA standards. Effective teaching requires a combination of course and curricular materials, developed learning outcomes, and thoughtful assignments and assessments designed to promote student learning.
Externship Support:
Collaborates closely with the Career Services Office, directing the Virginia Practice Externship program by recruiting local Virginia legal practitioners as supervisors, interviewing and matching students with practitioners, setting expectations for supervisors and externs, assessing externs, supporting employers, and providing meaningful and actionable feedback to all students and employers at the conclusion of externships.
Service:
Engages in service to the Law School and university community, participating in governance of the law school as requested/allowed, curricular development, and other institutional responsibilities as required by ABA accreditation standards. Provides service to the profession, works with judges and practicing lawyers to improve the profession, and provides service to the public including participation in pro bono activities and facilitation of student pro bono initiatives. Serves as faculty representative for Virginia Bar Exam matters. Examples include, but are not limited to, attendance at faculty meetings, curricular development, support for co-curricular student experiences, committee participation, and leadership in professional organizations.
Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree in a related field;
Virginia Bar membership in good standing;
Previous teaching/instructional experience in an institution of higher learning;
Prior clerkship and/or law practice experience;
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and interest in at least two areas of law, including, but not limited to, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Contracts, International Law, Family Law, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Professional Responsibility, or Virginia Practice or other Virginia-specific law courses;
Familiarity with the Northern Virginia legal market and local hiring trends;
Exceptional research and writing abilities;
Highly developed analytical skills; and
Excellent verbal and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with legal scholarship; and
Some knowledge of economics or application of economic principles to law.
