The Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University invites applications for a position in the field Modern Iranian History, with a particular emphasis on the period spanning 1700 CE to the present. We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar whose research engages critically with the historical development of Iran and the Persianate World in this timeframe. While the core of the position is historical in nature, we welcome applications from candidates whose work is grounded in History or other related humanities or social science disciplines, and whose scholarship brings fresh perspectives to the study of Iranian history and culture.

Recommendation letters are not required until the interview stage. Junior level applicants need to also provide a writing sample, for example one chapter or an article. Applicants are expected to have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline by the time of appointment. Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. The position requires a demonstrated record of original, high-quality research and scholarly publication, as well as advanced language proficiency sufficient for working with original source materials. The department is especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests align with and enhance our existing strengths, and who can make significant contributions to our undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active and sustained research agenda, contribute to the intellectual life and governance of the department, and participate in curriculum development and instruction at multiple levels.
