We at St. Anne's-Belfield School believe it is the quality and passion of our people that set us apart. We seek to hire the best teachers, administrators, and staff members to support our amazing student body by offering a competitive benefits package and providing a wonderful working environment.
Position Summary
St. Anne’s-Belfield School seeks a dynamic, full-time Humanities teacher and advisor to join a highly collaborative department. The ideal candidate is a scholar-practitioner capable of bridging the gap between History and English, with a specific focus on our interdisciplinary American Studies curriculum.
The Academic Program
Our Humanities program is designed to evolve with the student:
Grade 9: English and History are taught in separate classes, and the teaching team coordinates how our writing curriculum spirals through the courses.
Grades 10 & 11: Humanities 10 and American Studies classes are taught in a dual-credit class that provides an English credit and a History credit. Team teaching is frequently employed.
Grade 12: English is taught separately from History.
Candidate Profile: American Studies & Literature Focus
While this is a Humanities role, we are specifically seeking candidates with deep subject-matter expertise in American Literature and American History. The strongest candidates will demonstrate:
Integrated Expertise: Experience teaching American Literature and American History, with the ability to weave together historical and literary analysis.
Discussion-Based Pedagogy: A strong mastery of student-centered, discussion-based teaching methods (e.g., Harkness method, Socratic seminar). The teacher must be comfortable facilitating complex conversations where students engage directly with texts and one another.
The Teaching of Literature: A sophisticated approach to literary instruction
Collaborative Spirit: A willingness to embrace a team-teaching model and coordinate daily with colleagues to align the content of skills of the course.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Plan and teach classes in the Upper School Humanities department, specifically within the American Studies sequence.
Utilize a Standards-Based Learning (SBL) framework to provide clear, actionable feedback on student writing and critical thinking skills.
Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, monitoring their academic progress and well-being.
Integrate technology in meaningful ways to enhance the study of the humanities.
Community Involvement: As an independent school, we value community and expect that the selected candidate will serve as a coach for a sports team for one season and/or lead extracurricular programming equivalent to a coaching position beyond the classroom.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in English, History, American Studies, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience: Full-time classroom teaching experience with high school-aged students is required.
Skills: Strong organizational and classroom management skills, and the ability to joyfully teach adolescents.
To Apply: Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter to bmiller@stab.org.
