The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to teach 12th grade U.S. Government beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Serving more than 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, our school is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education.
Faculty at The Covenant School understand teaching as a Christian vocation. They take personal responsibility for students’ intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth and work together to cultivate a community of scholars in which students are known, challenged, and formed in habits of thought and character for lives of faithful service.
Position Overview:
The U.S. Government course serves as a capstone experience in the Upper School curriculum, inviting students to engage deeply with American political thought, constitutional principles, and civic institutions, while helping them develop habits of careful reasoning, disciplined argumentation, and clear written and oral expression. The course invites students to wrestle with enduring questions about authority, justice, responsibility, and the common good within a Christian understanding of truth.
Teaching responsibilities include college-preparatory and Advanced-level sections of U.S. Government, as well as serving as a principal advisor to students completing a year-long senior thesis project. We are seeking an educator who enjoys working with adolescents and who can establish an orderly, respectful, and intellectually vibrant classroom. The teacher approaches this work with both intellectual seriousness and care for students’ formation.
In keeping with the school’s mission, the teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into instruction, allowing Christian truth to illuminate the study of government while honoring the integrity of the discipline.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in History, Government, or a related field required
Advanced degree preferred
Experience teaching high school or college-aged students preferred
Ability to integrate Christian faith authentically and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
We welcome candidates whose experiences and backgrounds enrich this shared work, within a community shaped by a shared commitment to the school’s Christian mission and educational vision.
