NYU Shanghai is seeking full-time contract faculty to join its program in Interactive Media Arts (IMA), an undergraduate liberal arts program in the practice and theory of interactive media. IMA is one of the inaugural majors at NYU's Shanghai campus, with over 300+ enrollments per term and 100+ declared majors.
IMA combines practice-based work with critical scholarship in the exploration of the social, cultural and aesthetic fundamentals of emerging media. With computation at its core, our curriculum includes but is not limited to creative programming, digital media creation (animation, VR/AR, and time-based media), physical computing, and digital fabrication. Our seminars cover the theory, history and semiotics of emerging media, to create a measured balance to the applied component of the program.
This is a Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty (FTCC) position. Candidates must have completed a terminal degree by the time of appointment in September 2023. Typical appointments are on 3 year terms, with expected teaching loads of 4 courses per academic year. While we seek applications from candidates with an active research profile, successful candidates will be hired on the basis of teaching and service. Compensation and terms of employment are comparable to U.S. institutions and include faculty housing or subsidies.
Responsibilities
Faculty teach two courses per semester, usually one core course and one elective. Electives may be a production class or a seminar. In addition, faculty will advise students, and participate in departmental and school-wide committees. Ongoing professional work is encouraged. Teaching experience, a commitment to undergraduate education, and enthusiastic dedication to this rapidly growing and evolving program are essential.
The core curriculum requirements of IMA majors areĀ foundation courses (Choosing two from: Interaction Lab, Communications Lab, Creative Coding Lab, and Application Lab), a research-based seminar, and a year-long Senior Capstone Studio. https://ima.shanghai.nyu.edu/foundations, https://ima.shanghai.nyu.edu/capston
Elective courses have included: ABC Browser Circus, After Us: Post-Human Media, Creative Game Design and Development, Data: Code it Make it, Digital Sculpting for Facial Animation, Expanded Web, Global Media Cultures, Hello Metaverse, History of Human-Computer Interaction, Immersive Arts, Industrial Design in Action, Interactive Fashion, Introduction to Robotics, Kinetic Light, Media Architecture, Nature of Code, Responsive Environments, The Planetary: Computation in the Anthropocene, User Experience Design, VR/AR Fundamentals, and Web Page to Web Space.
NYU Shanghai and IMA have a diverse and international student population. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have worked outside the United States, or in institutions with an international student body.
Candidates must have a terminal degree (MFA, MPS, or PhD) as well as a minimum of two years full-time teaching or equivalent professional experience. Candidates should also have published work in a discipline related to the theory and practice of emerging media and / or an established record of creative practice with publicly exhibited work in related fields.
We seek candidates whose work intersects with the curriculum and research interests of IMA. This includes, but is not limited to:
- animation
- biotechnology, biohacking and bio art
- computational sound
- creative coding
- digital ethnography
- data and society
- hardware design and prototyping
- interaction design
- mobile, wearable and ubiquitous computing
- participatory and social media
- physical computing
- robotics
- technology and activism
- time-based media (audio and video)
- mixed reality (VR/AR)
- game design
Candidates should submit a letter of application, illustrative publications or documentation of creative work, a curriculum vitae, and the names of two referees who have agreed to submit reference letters upon request.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For best consideration, materials should be submitted by no later than December 1, 2022. Additional information about the position can be obtained through writing to ima@nyu.edu.
