Job Summary: | The Philosophy and Religious Studies Department in the School of Liberal Arts at Marist College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin in August 2025. Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate philosophy courses at all levels, including Introduction to Philosophy. AOS is Global Philosophy (where by “Global Philosophy” is meant philosophy coming from outside of the “canonical” Western traditions, including, but not limited to African/Africana Philosophy, East Asian and South Asian Philosophy, Indigenous/First People’s Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, and Latin American Philosophy). The AOC should include one or more of the following: environmental ethics, contemporary ethical theory, philosophy of law, philosophy of race, philosophy of science, and empirical moral psychology. The Department already has good coverage in metaphysics & epistemology, aesthetics, philosophy of mind, contemporary Continental philosophy, ancient Greek philosophy, modern philosophy, social and political philosophy, and logic. Candidates will teach our First Year Seminar course regularly, and candidates will have opportunities to teach courses in our Honors Program. A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduates is required.
This position is part of an ongoing cluster hire as we welcome additional new faculty members as part of our Global Studies cluster. These new faculty members will join faculty in the departments of English, history, modern languages and cultures, and political science who focus on Global Studies generally, and Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies specifically. The position is also part of a major college-wide hiring initiative with the goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution. |
Minimum Qualifications: | PhD in hand by the time of the appointment. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level is required. |
Essential Functions: | The teaching load will be 3-4 with a mixture of introductory and advanced courses but faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a 3-3 teaching load. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community. |

- Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

About the Department/School: | The School of Liberal Arts includes 50 full-time faculty and over 75 part-time faculty. The School of Liberal Arts includes departments in English, history, modern languages, philosophy & religious studies, and political science, and many interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, Cognitive Science, Global Studies, and Latin American & Caribbean Studies. In addition, the ABA approved Paralegal Studies Program and the Pre-Law Program are part of the School of Liberal Arts.
