President
The Office of the President has as its primary purpose to provide overall leadership for Bishop O’Dowd High School in order to achieve the fullest attainment of the school’s unique Catholic mission. The President is appointed and delegated authority by the Bishop of Oakland (as owner) after consultation with the Board of Regents and acts as the Chief Executive Officer for the school with the guidance of the Board of Regents, Bishop O’Dowd High School, in the implementation of plans and policies. As an overall leader, the President serves as a role model for staff and students and bears ultimate responsibility for the integration of faith and learning within the school. The President oversees academic affairs, Campus Ministry, and student affairs through the Principal and Vice President of Catholic Mission. The President, with the Principal and the Vice President of Catholic Mission, is responsible for faith community affairs. The President is responsible for ensuring sufficient resources through direct oversight of business affairs, advancement, community relations, strategic planning, and enrollment management activities. The President acts as the primary liaison between the school, the Board of Regents, the Diocese of Oakland, the City of Oakland, partner parishes and schools, and the broader community. The President is ultimately responsible for the successful overall operation of the school as accomplished through effective planning and delegation of responsibilities to the administrative team, faculty, and staff.
Accountability:
? The Search Committee recommends candidates and the Bishop of Oakland appoints the President of Bishop O’Dowd High School.
? The President is accountable directly to the Board of Regents, Bishop O’Dowd High School, for areas of responsibility delegated to the Board by the Bishop as provided for in the bylaws of the Board.
? The President is responsible to the Diocese of Oakland through the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.
Supervises:
Principal, Chief Development Officer, Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Director of Admissions, Director of Marketing, Director of Human Resources, and selected non-teaching personnel.
Member of:
Ex-officio member and Administrative Officer, Board of Regents, Bishop O’Dowd High School; Chairperson, Executive Council; and ex-officio member of all other school councils and committees.
Responsibilities:
? Assists the Board in the ongoing assessment and development of the mission of the school.
? Articulates and promotes the mission, charism, and Catholic identity of the school and ensures the overall maintenance of the school’s Catholic identity.
? Plans and directs the establishment of a philosophy of education that describes beliefs about youth and education espoused by the school, takes into account the needs of the students to be served as seen by their Church and community and directs the development of goals and objectives necessary to implement this philosophy.
? Ensures that all programs and activities reflect the Catholic mission of the school.
? Oversees the overall development and enhancement of the faith community and integration of faith with the learning process in conjunction with the Principal.
Faith Community Affairs (Mission and Catholic Identity)
? Ensures that students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni/ae, and benefactors are all aware of and involved in the charism and faith life of the school.
? With the Principal and Vice President of Catholic Mission, employs and supervises the Associate Principal for Campus Ministry.
? With the Principal and Vice President of Catholic Mission, ensures coordination of parish-related and diocesan activities.
? Ensures the development and enhancement of faith community and the integration of faith and the charism with the learning process through direct involvement in their implementation in faculty/staff retreats, student retreats, days of recollection, service programs, religious studies, liturgies, and paraliturgical services, etc.
? With the Principal and Vice President of Catholic Mission, works with the Religious Studies Department Chair on the preparation and coordination of the religious education curriculum and programs.
Academic Affairs
? Employs, supervises, and evaluates the Principal.
? Ensures the policies are promulgated and implemented concerning academic affairs.
? Ensures the overall quality of the academic programs through the Principal.
? Participates in hiring and dismissing of all administrative and instructional staff initialing all contracts.
? Keeps abreast of current development in Catholic education.
Student Affairs
? Ensures the policies are promulgated and implemented concerning student affairs.
? Ensures the overall quality of the student affairs programming through the Principal.
? Participates in hiring and dismissing of all activity advisors and athletic staff, initialing all contracts.
? Attends/supervises school events in conjunction with the administrative team.
Advancement Affairs
? Leads a comprehensive program to market the school for image, enrollment, and resources.
? Ensures the policies are promulgated and implemented concerning advancement affairs.
? Employs, supervises and evaluates the Chief Development Officer.
? Serves as chief public relations officer for the school and ensures appropriate communication with various publics including media relations and a comprehensive annual report.
? Reviews and approves all fundraising and develops fundraising initiatives and activities with the Chief Development Officer.
? Participates in the cultivation of major donors and solicitation of major gifts for the school.
? Through the Chief Development Officer:
? Coordinates fundraising events;
? Coordinates annual and deferred giving programs;
? Coordinates marketing programs for image and enrollment through a comprehensive communication and marketing plan;
? Ensures good relations and involvement with the alumni/ae community.
? Through the Director of Admissions:
? Coordinates the overall enrollment management plan and program including student recruitment, admissions, and retention.
? Ensures appropriate communication with feeder schools and parishes and international agencies.
Business Affairs
? Provides overall leadership for responsible stewardship and appropriate reporting of school finances to the Diocese, Board, government agencies, and the school’s constituents.
? Ensures that policies are promulgated and implemented concerning business affairs.
? Ensures compliance with business policies and procedures in all academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activity programs.
? Employs, supervises and evaluates the school's Chief Financial & Administrative Officer.
? Oversees business affairs through the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer.
? Through the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer:
? Participates in the preparation of the annual school budget with the Principal, Board of Regents (Finance Committee) for final approval by the Superintendent and Diocesan Board of Education.
? Oversees the supervision, monitoring, and reporting of the annual school budget.
? Ensures appropriate supervision of administrative and non-instructional staff.
? Ensures that the school maintains a safe, clean environment.
? Coordinates all financial investments.
? Provides oversight of financial aid programs and processes.
? Provides oversight of school food service operations.
? Provides oversight of student transportation services.
? Ensures compliance with Board, school, Diocesan, and government policy concerning financial stewardship.
? Ensures that development funds are handled using principles of good stewardship that inspire donor confidence.
? In conjunction with the Board, assists in formulating and disseminating, and executing all school policies and regulations.
? Handles legal affairs for the high school in conjunction with the Diocese of Oakland (owner).
? Participates in hiring and dismissing of all non-instructional staff as required.
? Files reports and maintains records as required by the Diocese, accrediting agencies, and governmental agencies in a timely manner.
Human Resources
? Employs, supervises, and evaluates the school Director of Human Resources
? Oversees human resource affairs through the Director of Human Resources
? Ensures compliance with all human relations policies and procedures in conjunction with Diocesan and government policy through the Director of Human Resources
Facilities and Strategic Planning and Master Planning Affairs
? Oversees all buildings and grounds maintenance and planning through the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, and the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
? Directly responsible for the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan.
? Implements the Master Facilities Plan with and through appropriate school administrators.
? Serves with and through the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer and Director of Building Grounds as the liaison with planning and permit groups for the Diocese, City of Oakland, EBMUD, and other groups where appropriate.
Board Relations
? Serves as administrative officer to the Board of Regents, providing professional leadership.
? Serves as liaison between the school community and the Board.
? Serves as liaison between the Board and the Diocese (owner).
? Ensures that Board pre-service and in-service training are conducted on normative areas of governance responsibility.
? Coordinates with the Board a process of long-range strategic planning:
? Ensures the implementation of strategic plans and other plans as required by the Board, the state, the Diocese, and the regional accrediting agency.
? Ensures regular reporting of plans and progress to the school's various constituencies.
? Leads specific planning for finances, development, enrollment management, and communication.
? Works with the Board in formulating school policy and supervises the implementation of Board and Diocesan policy in the school.
Liaisons
? Plans and conducts regular meetings of the Executive Council.
? Serves as the chief representative of the school to the area parishes, schools and pastors, and international agencies.
? Works with the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools (or designee) as appropriate on issues of policy, planning, evaluation, and development.
? Serves as the chief representative of the school in dealings with the educational, civic, and diocesan communities.
? Submits to an annual performance evaluation by the Board and the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools.
? Performs other duties as designated by the Board and the Superintendent.
