Rank will be dependent on professional status and teaching experience.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, diversity, and inclusion as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing attention to differential embodied experience and expansion of the forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship) attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. We encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities including Native American peoples, Black and Indigenous peoples of color, Latinx, people who identify as LGBTQIA+, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
We seek candidates with deep understanding and applied experience in both traditional and contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing practices. The candidate should have a solid foundation in art and design concepts, demonstrate advanced jewelry and metalsmithing skills, demonstrate a capacity for critical thinking and discourse, and possess knowledge of the history of the discipline, as well as contemporary topics/theories. An active studio/research practice, complemented by a strong critical voice and a knowledgeable perspective on contemporary dialogues, is essential for this core faculty position.
Candidates with applied experience in the following areas relevant to departmental curriculum are encouraged to apply:
- Documenting jewelry in context: identity, status, and the body

- Historiographic and inclusive perspectives on jewelry and adornment in ancient, traditional, folk, and contemporary jewelry contexts
- New technologies, including augmented / virtual reality
- Social practice, community engagement, and the democratization of jewelry and the professional field
- Studio-based research methodologies and writing
Jewelry + Metalsmithing faculty teach collaboratively at each level of the BFA and MFA programs and participate in conversations about the departmental curriculum as a whole. The teaching expectation is six teaching units per year; other responsibilities include supporting the planning and scheduling of departmental programs, such as guest critics and lecturers, on and off campus exhibitions, representation at professional conferences, and co-curricular events that include the J+M, RISD and Providence communities. Critical to this appointment, candidates must demonstrate the ability to effectively manage administrative responsibilities and the ability to occupy, in rotation, the leadership positions of Department Head and Graduate Program Director.
Through internships, seminars, speakers and interactions with visiting artists and critics, the Jewelry + Metalsmithing Department maintains close links to the professional world. Collaborative projects with artists, external partners, faculty and students from other RISD departments, the RISD museum, the community, and the jewelry industry enrich the educational experience of students. Candidates must demonstrate the ability and interest to work in these areas in partnership with our diverse departmental faculty and the school as a whole.
