Position Summary The Pingry School seeks a dynamic and intellectually engaging Middle School English Teacher to join its diverse community. The ideal candidate is committed to guiding young people as they hone their skills in English in a student-centered classroom. They demonstrate a real commitment and passion for teaching in the Middle School and thrive on the opportunity to engage with this unique age group. A strong candidate is excited to work with other teachers, not only in the Middle School but also in the other divisions, fostering a K-12 culture of collaboration, shared purpose, and teamwork. With robust interpersonal skills, the ideal candidate has a real desire to contribute to the school community by sharing their passions and engaging in additional efforts, such as coaching teams or supervising activities.
Responsibilities
A full course load comprises four English classes, with the exact sections to be determined.
Serve as an advisor to a group of approximately 10 students.
Collaborate cross-departmentally on the development and execution of Middle School Project Week.
Fulfill an additional “plus one” requirement as assigned by the Middle School Director.
Fulfill any additional duties as assigned by the Middle School Director and/or Middle English Department Chair.
Participate in all required meetings, including morning meeting, faculty division meetings, scheduled collaboration times, professional development days, and beginning and end-of-year meetings.
Participate in all required professional development activities.
Provide extra support and supervision for students during flex and community times.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
Rich knowledge of reading and writing pedagogy, literary analysis, and English grammar.
Experience with and passion for teaching English at the Middle School level.
Facility with various teaching tools, comfort with designing courses, and fluency in various modes of inquiry.
Experience with advising students.
Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining a culture of access and equity in English education.
Dedication to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students.
Ability to foster creative thinking and problem-solving in students.
Ability to create a positive classroom environment that is safe, welcoming, and at the same time, intellectually challenging.
Robust interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Dedication to partnering collaboratively with a team of talented faculty.
Openness to feedback and professional growth.
Comfort with incorporating the latest technology into your workflow, including Schoology, Zoom and the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.)
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and ask for help when needed.
